A man rushed breathlessly into a law?
yer's office in St. Paul, and approaching
the legal luminary, excitedly remarked:

That was good advice, and didn't cost
the man but So.
A few days sinco a farmer was saying
that he had planted an acre and a half of
potatoes, and he feared they would bo
destroyed by the potato bugs. "Aro the
plants* up yet?" asked a bystander.
"No," replied the farmer, "but the bugs
are sitting on every hill waiting for
them."
Probably no characteristic of the fe?
male mind" is better developed than the
docility with which women accept the
fashions of the day. Be they beautiful
or hideous, becoming or unbecoming,
comfortable or torturing, they are the
"fashion" and must be worn.

Never before was there such a demand
for grain cradles in Georgia as during
the past three weeks. ThiB indicates a
large wheat crop and a bountiful supply
of bread.

cracker, sky-rocket or explosive and
noisv substance within the above limits
on either of the above-named days is $20.

for the General Assembly," passed in last
regular session of 1874-75, and approved
on "March 24, 1875, SEALED PRO?
POSALS for a supply of 1 OH tons of
COAL, for the use of the several Depart?
ments of the Government, and for the
Houses of Senate and Representatives,
will he received at this office until the
28th of July next, as follows:
43 tons for the several Departments of
the State Government.
50 tons for the Semite.
75 tons for the House of Representa?
tives.
The party or parlies to whom a con?
tract may be awarded shall, before en?
tering on the performance therrof, give
a bond, with sufficient security, on such
terms as may ho proscribed by the At
torne'y-Geueral, conditioned for its faith?
ful performance; and in case of his or
their failure to do so, within thirty days
alter it has heon awarded and approved,
it shall be awarded to the next lowest re?
sponsible bidder.
The payment of the accounts for Coal
and Advertising is provided for in Sec?
tion 11 of the said Act.
The proposals will be opened at Co?
lumbia, S. C, in the presence of a board,
consisting of the Governor, the Secretary
of State and Attorney-General; contracts
shall be of no effect until approved by
the said board.
The Coal must be of host quality of
red ash grate coal, and has to be deli?
vered free of charges to the State House,
in the city of Columbia, S. C.

nance concerning streets, pavements
and shade trees," will lie rigidly en?
forced :
Section 10. * v ' * That all
owners of lots in the city of Columbia
shall each repair, mend and keep, at his
or her expense, the side-walk butting on
his or her lot, according to such direc?
tions as the Mayor and Aldermen may,
from time to time, give; and any person
neglecting or refusing to do so, after ten
days' notice, shall forfeit and pay the
sum of S10 for each and every day he or
.-he shall or may refuse or neglect. And
it shall be the duty of the Chief of Bo
lice, after the expiration of said notice,
to cause said side-walk to be leveled or
repaired at tin? expense of the owner of
tho adjoining lot; which expense, when
approved by the Mayor and Aldermen,
shall be collected in tin; same manner as
the tax upon real estate, after ten days'
notice to tin; party concerned.
