Scarnlul?or rather the wickedness
which is the source o ' scandal?must be
infectious, for the whole atmosphere in
and around and about New York seems
to be tainted with the malaria. Whether
the Beecber business has corrupted the
minds of the children, or whether it is
simply an epidemical outcropping of
original sin among the juvenile portion
of society, is a question that-admits of
argument; but, nevertheless, the rumor
is current that the public schools of
Jersey Heights are in a sad state, as far
as the morals of the pupils are con?
cerned. It is said that the boys and
girls are not observing the restrictions
laid down regarding their mutual inti?
macy, and that tho former have suc?
ceeded in climbing the fence that divides
their play ground, with shocking re?
sults. The attention of the school trus?
tees has been called to the matter, and
there are many fond parents who arc in
dreadful suspense as to the outcome of
the investigation.
A rather interesting railroad case has
just been decided in the Connecticut
courts. A Norwnlk man, wdio had a
commutation ticket on the New Y'ork,
New Haven and Hartford Railroad, con?
ceived the genuinely Y'ankeo idea of
conducting a private express business by
mating daily trips over the road and
carrying for regular customers at low
rates small wares in carpet-bags and
packages, and had soon built np a pro?
fitable little business. The railroad
officials, however, discovered bis game
and forbade his carrying any baggage for
hire except at the regular rates for ex?
press carriers, and, on his attempting to
evado this order, the Superior Court has
been appealed to and decided that he
must obey it.
Over 1,000 newspapers have failed in
this country during the past year.
