As a boy was going down Porter street,
yesterday, a woman opened the front
door ef a house and called, "John! John!
John!" As the boy paid no attention to
the calls, a pedestrian said to him: "Here,
bub, your mother is calling you." "No
she isn't," replied the lad, as he turned
the corner;" she's only father's second
wife, andT want her to* understand that
she can't run me!"
If "Rome was not built in a day," the
inference is that it sprung up in the
night, and thus became a mushroomy
city.

THE COUNTY AUDITOR'S OFFICE
will be open for receiving RETURNS
from JUNE 1 to JUDY 20, 1875, instead
of July 1 to August 20, as heretofore.
The law requires the County Auditor
to assess all parties w ho fail to list their
personal property within the time above
noted, at the same valuation as of 1874,
and add a penalty of fifty per cent,
thereto; and all new buildings and
structures, not returned in 1874, must be
returned for the fiscal year 1875, and in
default thereof a penalty of fifty per
cent, will attach.
To facilitate the tax-payers in making
their returns for the hscal year 1875, I
will attend in person at the following
