George A. Darling, Esq., 'Treasurer of
Richland County, made his first settle?
ment as Treasurer on the 17th, at the
Comptroller-General's office, and a com?
plete and satisfactory Hcttlement it is.
Although Mr. Dsrhng boa been but
recently appointed Treasurer of this
County, his experience in the office as
chief clerk for Treasurer Baldwin, and
his polite and gentlemanly deportment
at all times, has made him a host of
friends. His personal attention to busi?
ness is unexampled. The aggregate
amount collected and turned into the
State Treasury was $?18,848,48, upon
which there was but $714.5(1 nulla bona.
This is the most extraordinary statement
of the collection of taxes, that has no
parallel in the Stute and probably not in
the Union.? Union-llerala.
Philadelphia has a "Society for the
Prevention of Mendicants," the members
of which are doing a good work in un?
earthing a gang of bogus cripples and
diseased persons, who nro pretenders,
artificially gotton np, or imported for
speculative purposes. The society has
discovered that there are over 3,000 such
frauds in the city, who average $3 apiece,
every day, drawn from the pockets of
benevolently-inclincll individuals.
