It is stated upon what appears to be
unimpeachable authority, that the insect
now threatening the North-western crops
is not the Acridium Spectus, as was fear?
ed, but simply the Gryllns Veridissimus.
Ab every reader knows, the Acridium
Spectus will oat up a field of corn and
forget all about it while the GrylluB
Veridissimus is spitting in his hands to
begin. At any rate, that is about what
some of the newspapers say.
McKirby, "A. T. Stewart's pilfering
salesman," was gorgeously supplied with
Sunday clothes. He had 144 pairs of
pantaloons, and other toggery in propor?
tion. To us poor fellows who, with two
pairs of pantaloons, would feel like bloat?
ed bond-holders, and who have to go to
bed every Saturday in order to secure a
boiled shirt for Sunday, that McKirby
wardrobe seems more like the creation of
a poet's fancy than anything else.
The Philadelphia Press says the pau?
city of hotel accommodations in that
city, in view of the centennial, is an
"unpleasant state of affairs." It looks
like it; for the hotels in operation could
not accommodate the most ordinary rush
of sight-seers. There will bo n good
deal of profanity diffused through the
nir in Philadelphia in about one year
from the present time.
"The Susan Dimock free bed" is to be
endowed in a Boston hospital, in honor
of the good and useful woman of that
name who lost her life on the Schiller.
A wooden-legged Lothario in the
Whately, Mass., poor-house, has eloped
with the poor-master's wife.
The Second Missouri District is rep?
resented in Congress by a retired 'bus
driver.

Notice to Tax-Payers.
THE COUNTY AUDITOR'S OFFICE
will be open for receiving RETURNS
from JUNE 1 to JULY 20, 1875, instead
of July 1 to August 20, as heretofore.
The law requires the County Auditor
to assess all parties who fail to list their
personal property within the time above
noted, at the samo valuation as of 1874,
and add a penalty of fifty per cent,
thereto; and all new buildings and
structures, not returned in 1874, must be
returned for tho fiscal year 1875, and in
default thereof a penalty of fifty per
cent will attach.
To facilitate the tax-payers in making
their returns for the fiscal year 1875, I
will attend in person at the following
Precincts:
Gadsden Precinct, June 17, 18 and 10.
Acton Precinct, Juno 21 and 22.
Davis' Precinct, June 24.
Garner's Precinct, June 28 and 29.
