Mr. Char leu Lei and, of Philadelphia,
bos just published a book, in which he
produces a massive argument to prove
that Christopher Columbus did not first
discover America, nor did any of the ad?
venturers to whom the school books
ascribe the feat. He declares emphati?
cally that a Chinese Buddhist priest
named Hoei-Shin, in the year 499, re?
turned to* China from n voyage, and
stated to the wondering celestials that he
had discovered a great country across
the sea, which he had named Tusang.
He described the natives in such a way
as to identify thorn with the American
Indians, Peruvians and other races. If |
Mr. Lelond can maintain his theory, as
he appears to bo able to do, our school
geographies will have to ohango the an?
swer to the question, "Who discovered
America?" from "Columbus" to "Hoei
Shin." .

The Rev. M. H. Worrell delivered a
very, fine and touching oration on de?
coration day, at Springfield, 111. Peo?
ple were affected to tears; the preacher
was regarded with reverence, and on all
sides the praises of his eloquence re?
sounded. The address was published
in the papers the next morning, and a
gentleman, while perusing it, was struck
with its similarity to the oration of Hon.
Edward Everett, delivered at the conse?
cration of Gettysburg Cemetery in 1863.
Procuring the valume containing Eve?
rett's speech, he found that the elo?
quent Worrell had reproduced literally
the Everett oration. Worrell is now
under the ban. He stays closely at
home.
The Georgetown Comet, of the 4th in?
stant; says: "Every bush and tree on
Sampit has been rendered leafiesB by
the ravages of the caterpillar. There
are myriads in the woods. They get in
the boxes on the turpentine farms, and
in every three bushels of crude stuff |
there io one bushel of caterpillars. The
first-class virgin has to be sold for No. 2
rosin, and the spirits are rendered of?
fensive to the olfactories. The caterpillars
ore smaU and of a grayish color."
A bankrupt carpet-bagger is a refresh?
ing spectacle. The assets of J. Hale
Sypher, of Louisiana, are shown to be
$732, and his liabilities $140,000. Butler
seated him in Congress to vote on cer?
tain infamous administration measures
like the Force Bill, and when the Re?
publican party got through with him
they kicked him out, saying he had been
seated by fraud. He certainly waB. He
is a mere Sypher now.
A fearful Navy Department job is that)
dry dock at Mare Island, San Francisco.
It has been building three years, and
has cost thus far $800,000, and not one
fifth of the work is completed. The
whole structure is, moreover, on the
Verge of caving in, through careless
workmanship.
