At noonday, according to traditional usage, the bell in the steeple sounded as a signal for public rejoicing. Immediately the old gates of tho oity, the Sublio monuments and the houses were raped with cloth and standards in the national colors, with the arms of Orleans and thoso of the Maid, bearing upon azure the royal ?woxd, Leaded by a crown and bordered with two of the three lilies of France. On the 9th, at 9 o'clook in the morning, the panegyric upon Joan of Arc was pronounced in the cathedral, which was decorated with great splendor. The ingenious French have contrived a novel way to impress the barbaric mind. M. de Brazza, who has charge of the expedition to Senegal, carries an electric battery in his pocket, communi? cating with two rings on his hand and with other apparatus scattered about his person. When he shakes hands with a savage chief, that chief will be very much astonished, for an electric shook will run up his arm, and he will see lightning Slaying about the head' of his visitor, aturally, he will think he is being in? terviewed by tho devil, and will be ready to consent to anything in order to getaway. Hasn't it about time for the loyal editor to stop turning pale every time Mr. Jef? ferson Davis happens to receive a little public attention in the South? Is it ne? cessary for tho safety of the Union to pronounce the applause which greets the speeches of the ex-President of the Con? federacy the "old rebel yell?" Under the order, the post office, most of the stores and the I railroad depot will have to be moved. A gentleman lately arrived at San Francisco from Peru, contradicts the re? port of Harry Meiggs' failure, and states that he merely canceled his engage? ments, owing to complications with the Peruvian Government. He also states that Meiggs. will attend the centennial exhibition at Philadelphia. Egypt's great railway from Catro to Khartoum is progressing rapidly, and it is proposed to extend it Westward to Darfur. Plans have been prepared for a railway from Khartoum to the frontier of Abyssinia, the acqussition of which country is regarded as only a question of time by the Egyptian Government. ? The two artillerymen, Messrs. Wil? liams and Binghani, who each lost an arm at the Charlotte Centennial, are im? proving favorably. Steam traffic seems to be a success on the Erie Canal.
