BY JULIAN A. SELBY The Mammoth Cave of Mexico.? It iB'said that the mammoth Caca huamilpa is the largest cave in the world. Several persons who have visited the Mammoth Cave of Ken? tucky, and that of Cacahuamilpa, in Mexico, pronounce the latter the larger. A volcanic mountain, with an extinct crater, covers this cave. It is not described in guide books or books of travel. It has, in fact, never been adequately described. Mr. Porter C. Bliss has twice exa? mined and explored it, the last time in February of the past year. 600 persons constituted the last exploring party; they were pro? vided with Bengal lights and scien? tific appliances. After reaching a level of perhaps fifty feet depth; they proceeded three and three quarter miles into the interior. The roof was so high?a succession of halls?that rockets often ex? ploded before striking it. Laby? rinthine passages leave the main hall in every direction. Stalag? mites and stalactites are abundant. Below this cave, at a great depth, are two other immense caves, from which issues a branch of a great river, uniting here. These two rivers enter some five mileB distant at the outside of the mountain, flow parallel, and issue at last to? gether. Vast quantities of bate are the most numerous inhabitants of these caverns. A Russian claims to have disco? vered a process for producing light by electricity, which is thus de? scribed: A small tube of glass, not more than six inches in length, is filled with a pencil of charcoal, the air is exhausted, and the tube her? metically sealed.. A moderate cur? rent of electricity is then passed through the charcoal from an ordi? nary electro-magnetic machine, causing it to glow with a very bril? liant, but at the same time soft light. It is stated that the char? coal does not apparently suffer con? sumption, but lasts for an indefi-1 nite period, and that the strength of the current required is so small that 200 of these lights, at. a con? siderable distance apart, can be easily maintained- by a single ma? chine. The inventor claims that he can light the whole city of St. Petersburg, both, street lamps, stores and private residences, by a single fifteen horse-power machine, with no greater cost than running the machine. The steamer "William, belonging to $he St. Lawrence Tan Company, caught fire and was nearly destroy? ed before the firemen got the flames under control. Some mis? creants cut her ropes and she drifted into the stream, with thirty men on board, and fearful loss would have resulted but for the arrival of a tug, which got her back to the wharf. The loss is estimated at $15,000. Collector Carpenter, of this Dis? trict, recently sent out a raiding party against the illicit whiskey distillers of the upper Counties of his District, and succeeded in cap? turing seven stills, a large quantity of whiskey, and five prisoners. The party is still out, with the prospect of making other captures. The grand jury of, Anderson, in their presentment, say: "We regret to report that the Trial Justice living in the fork does not do his duty in trying to suppress tho illi? cit .traffic in ? whiskey. Whiskey wagons in that community have become a great nuisance." When we come to the second centennial anniversary of, our na? tional.independence, it will proba? bly be written that the Indian race, with ' the exception, perhaps, of a few remnants in some outlying frontier section, has passed away.
