An Egyptian Mummy Regaining J
the Appearance of Life.?A gentle?
man of Halifax, England, being in
Egypt, brought back several heads
token from human mummies.
These heads were bought in sepa?
rate small boxes, and one of them
in some way got soaked in salt
water on the voyage. "When it
was opened by Mr. Leyland, in the
prosence of a number of other gen?
tlemen, they were startled?even
astounded?to find that the flesh
on the face had recovered its out?
lines, the cheeks and chin were
plump and .rounded, the open eyes
looked upon them, and even
seemed to move. The gentlemen
hastened to call others from all
parts of the museum to observe
this wonderful phenomenon. For
a few minutes they beheld an un?
mistakable Egyptian countenance,
with pleasant, composed expres?
sion?-the face of a man who lived
at least 3,000 years ago. They
could only conclude that the pow?
erful aromatic gums which had
been used had arrested the decay
which the salt water had now ren?
dered possible, and which speedily
set in after the head was taken
from its box and wrappings. But
several gentlemen who saw it, have
assured me that they can never
forget the life-likeness of the face
before the swift decay of flesh
which followed..
The French papers publish in?
teresting returns from the savings
banks of that country. There are
508,'with over 2,000,000 deposit?
ors, and 535,000,000 francs, or
$107,000,000, on deposit January
1, 1875. During the preceding
year 75,000 workingmen had made
deposits averaging $40 each, 35,000
domestic servants averaging $31
each, and 57i000 persons of other
occupations averaging less than
$30 each. The entire deposits of
the year were $7,100,000, of which
the first two classes named con?
tributed $4,200,000. The French
savings bank system dates back to
1835, and the depositors now ave?
rage 57 to the 1,000 of population.
The Philadelphia mint is coin?
ing a new twenty-cent piece. The
words "In God we Trust," are not
on the coin as on the half-dollar
emission. That's the way with
man.' When he begins to accumu?
late wealth ho grows pious. He
trusts in God at fifty cents and
not at twenty?the same as the old
lady who "trusted in Providence
till the britching broke."
Out in Nebraska, among the
grasshopper sufferers, a circus is
advertised, calling itself the "cirqu
oloojricalisttimeran," and victims
stand around reading the bills by
the hour, wondering if the door?
keeper will take old clothes for
admission.
