efforts to secure the passage of the
Oivil Bights Bill were of the ' most
selfish description. He believed
that under the provisions of that
bill, .whenever denied admission to
a hotel dining-room on account of
the silverware, he could spread his
character over his face, thus ren?
dering it blacker .than the ace of
spades, and go in as a negro.
