The Budget of Public Assistance
in Paris spends $6,000,000 annually
in giving aid to the sick, the poor,
ana to foundlings. Estimates for
{he current year have bee? made
for 855,000 needy persons 26,000
abandoned children, and for main?
taining 20,000 beds in the hospitals.
The revenue for this purpose is de?
rived from legacies, tax on the
undertakers, pawnbrokers, and
upon the theatrical managers; who
pay a heavy duty levied on their
receipts. The city makes up tho
remainder from municipal budget.
From Poverty to "Wealth.?W.
S. O'Brien, of San Francisco,
whose immense riches were so
suddenly acquired in "Bonanza"
speculations, is a son of Wetmore
O'Brien, a respectable citizen of
Minneapolis, Minnesota. He ar?
rived at the mines with but fifteen
cents in his pocket and worked as
a laborer, taking mining stock in
payment of wages in lieu of money,
which he could not get. His fortune
is estimated at $250,000,000.
Gov. Chamberlain has been in?
vited by the faculty and students
of the law department of Yale
College to deliver the annual
oration. To be thus selected to
deliver the oration before the law
school of Yale is a high honor,
which has recently been accorded
to Hon. Win. M. Evarts, Hon. Jos.
Choate, Hon. H. B. Harrison, and
last year by Hon. Edwarn Pierre
po'nt.
'*Uncle John" Robinson, the old
showman, who is on the track for
the Cincinnati Mayoralty, is made
of suoh tough material as Scotch
and Dutch blood. He started ont
in life as a sailor, but his ship was
wrecked almost before she got out
of sight. of land, which induced

he has been ever' since, and has

Nice Gloves.-?There are some
people at Port Colborne, Canada,
who think they can make a "kid
glove" from a catfish's skin, and the
factory will be open this spring.
Paris has been making kid gloves
from rat skins for a long time, and
everybody is satisfied with the pro*
duct if it only bears the requisite
trade-mark. The leathery integu?
ment of the catfish is said to be
equally available for the purpose.
The Brooklyn trial was com?
menced with the intention of de?
monstrating whether Bescher fre?
quented Mrs. Tilton's apartments
or not. Somehow or other the
track has been jumped, and the
effort now seems to be that of re?
futing Beecher's indiscretion by
demonstrating that Ti^ton frequent?
ed the boudour of Victoria Wood
hull in his stocking feet.
