Empty Buildings in New Yore.
The New York World publishes a
list of empty buildings and offices
on Broadway, between Bowling
Green and Fourteenth street,
which it says is "really startling."
Along this central thoroughfare,
out. of 850 numbers, 280 display
the renting card, occasionally for a
single offtce, and in not a few cases
for thb whole building. Besides
these, the notification of desk room
to let are very frequent indeed,
showing a general desire in many
quarters to lighten the rent. The
side streets from Broadway, and
which for many styles of business
are folly as good as the main street
itself, also show a good many offers
"to let." Canal, Crosby, Greene,
Grand, Spring, Mercer, "Warren,
and Walker streets have many fine
stores and lofts waiting for occu?
pants. While the dwelling-house
property is holding up well, the
stores and offices are tailing right
and left The World says the dull?
ness does not seem to be confined
to any special section of the city or
any particular business. It is a
general business stagnation, a sort
of after-wave of the panic of '73.
There are about one-third more
buildings now open* to rent than
there were a year or a year and a
half ago. The temporary rentals
which are made are in many cases
at a reduction of between 30 and
40 per cent
The Cuban rebels have, after
fighting six or seven years, got
possession of the sugar .district of
the island and all the important
ports except Havana. During their
raids they nave destroyed a great
deal of property owned by Ame?
ricans. Grant and Fish, were so
long getting the Virginias matter
Bottled, however, that the Spanish
rebels will doubtless have time to
conquer the whole island and then
repudiate the damages to Ame?
rican residents on the island.
Damages should be claimed, from
Spain at once, while she has a fin?
ger in the Cuban pie.'
John Mitchet. and the British.?
It appears from the record of the
Supreme Court of the District of
Columbia, that the late John
Mitchel renounced his allegiance
to Queen Victoria and became a
citizen of the United States in May,
1860. He had declared his inten?
tion to become a citizen at San
Francisco, in October, 1853, when
he was about 87 years of age. This
fact alone would have nullified his
election to the British Parliament.
