The latest tidings from Nevada con?
firm the earlier reports that the great
of sudden riches which presented itself

cisco, especially, went mad with hopes
and fears, as did the fat burghers of
Amsterdam at tho time of the great
tnlip mania, when worthless bo lbs were
sold for their weight in gold. Not only
were the bulls snd bears of the Ssn
Francisco Stock Board involved in the
tierce straggle, bat the insane desire to
acquire etook in the mines pervaded all
classes. Ladies sacrificed the money
which would ordinarily deck their per?
sons with finery and bought etook;
school-mistresses expended their wages;
poor people sold their homes and in?
vested the proceeds; all who could beg
or borrow bought etook, and by no
means all of them bought it when it
wsslow. San Francisco, for a time,
danoed to a very lively tone, and just
now San Francisco is engaged in pay?

They have got a good thing in Mi?
chigan, if the experiments result satis?
factorily. Illuminating gas of sixteen
candle power is obtained from tho
burning of wood, or rather the gas
msde in the manufacture of oharcoal,
is preserved snd used. One cord of
wood will make 86,000 cubic feet of
good gas. The ooat of making it is
said to be 18 cents per 1,000 feet. As
