tumaciously to resist their bishops.
The publication of our discourses is
punished by the oivil power; penal I
laws are enaoted against publishing

testants nearly all decided, the business
of the members, yesterday morniog,
oonsisted ohiefly in preparing their re?
port. The session was strictly private.
At theolose of the session, Mr. Wheeler
informed the representatives of the
press that committee had closed the
investigation and made awards in the
oases of nineteen Representatives,
whose elaima van submitted to their
arbitration. From all the evidence
which had oome iuto their possession,
as well daring tho previous investiga?
tion as from an examination of the
election record, bo said the members
of the committee had unanimously
agreed in their award; bat for reasons
which the public would appreoiate, it
bad been decided not to make the re?
sult of their deliberations known ut
present. He said the award of the
committee would be forwarded at onoe
to the Governor, with duplioato returns
of the eleotioos submitted to them for
examination, and that a special session
of the House of Representatives of
Louisiana would be convened, for the
purpose of taking action in the matter.
He oould not say bow soon this would
be effeoted, but he hoped that the da
oision at whiob they had arrived would
be approved. It had beea agreed upon
after most careful examination into the
faots of each particular case, and was
based upon the impartial judgment of
the members of tho arbitrating com
mittee. He said be regretted very
muoh that he could not furnish any
particulars to the press, as the circum?
stances of the oaue reudered it neces
sary that the award shoold not bo mado
poblio until the lower House of the
Louisiana Legislature should be pre
pared to take final aotion in the mat?
ter. It rested entirely with that body
to confirm the compromise whioh had
been agreed npen. It is understood
that Mr. Wheeler will present the re
port to the House of Representatives,
which special session is oouvened for
that purpose. Although nothing of a
definite oharaoter oould be ascertained
from the members of the arbitration
committee, it seems to be generally
understood by counsel in the oase
that the Gonservatives will gain a num
ber of seats through the compromise
It baa transpired that the result of
the arbitration will give the Gonserva
tives the lower House, but will retain
a small Republican majority on joint
ballot, which, should Pin oh back be
rejected, will make a lively contest
over the Senatorship.
