locked that what hurts one department
hurts all. The hotels are losing money,
and seem like banqueting halls desert?
ed. Grooers groan over the lack of
trade. Men who bought by the pound,
bny by the quarter; men who bought
by the oheet, buy by the pound,
Botchers say that their trade has de?
creased one-half; men live on vegeta?
bles. The barbers complain; men
ahave themselves. The ear receipts
are reduced; men walk instead of rid?
ing. They have nothing to do, aud five
cents is worth saving. The ohurobee
feei this state of things terribly. In
one ohnroh that I happen to know,
over a third of the pew rents have |
been lost, and the penny collections
have been reduced one-half. In the
most important Baptist Church in this
city, 91.000 was taken from the minis?
ter's salary, and in'a miff he resigned.
A general reduction of salaries is
threatened all along the line. Last
year, in Brooklyn, a very costly Pres?
byterian Ohnroh was bnilt through the
influence of one man. He was worth
8250,000, and promised to "see the |
thing through." He went to smash,
and the minister, disheartened, has!
left. Our mission work feels the
pressure beyond example. The suf?
ferers have increased a handred fold,
aud the supply is out off fnil fifty per
oent. The ssme is trne of all the
benevolent operations. The Dntoh
Ohnroh has annonnoed that their re?
ceipts, the last month for missions,
ware the smallest ever known since the
organisation. Many are begging who
never begged before. There is abso?
lutely nothing to be done, and no pay
if people oould got work. To say that I

and also to provide a mansion, com?
modious, convenient and elegant, in
whioh to reside nntil he "can make I
other arrangements." Butler is a bold,
far-seeing man. We fear that we may,
before the present epoch is over, have
to add that he is a bad man.

court dismissed the complaint, holding
