Going Back on Himsrlf.?Lord
John Russell has lately admitted that
bo was wrong, while foreign secretary
under Lord Palmoretou, in letting the
Alabama, escape. Even in 1870, be in?
sisted,' in < the public edition of his
speeches, that the conduct of England
in the Alabama case, was all that the
United States could have asked. Now,
however, in the "Recollections and
Suggestions" of his long and busy lifo,
(which has now > reached eighty-three
years,) he takes the blame to himself,
in ^three ' place? in his book. Sir
Robert Collier, as counsel for the
United States, submitted to him an
argument for the detention of tbe Ala?
bama; nevertheless, Earl Russell waited
several days for the opinion of the law j
officers of the Crown, and in this in?
terval the Alabama escaped, "It was j
my fault," ha now says, "as Seoretary
of State for Foreign Affairs," that the
Alabama was not detained on tbe pri?
ma facie case made out by Sir Robert I
Collier, and pending the advice of the
Grown lawyers. The old earl, how?
ever, is very wroth over the treaty of
Washington and the Iobs of San Juan
Island. In regard to the Trent affair,
when Palmerston asked him what he
thought of it, Russell replied that "the
United States Government are very
dangeroas people to run away from,"
quoting the language of Gruttau to?
ward another people. They awaited,
however, the opinion of the law of?
ficers of the Orowp, and, as Rassell
thinks, were "far from presspng hard"
on our Government. He considers
that reparation was "honorably de?
manded and honorably granted."
