t took 61.000.000 to convert Serrano,
and the Queen is said to have spent in
all abont 98,000,000. To raise this
earn, she hss had reoonrso to every
possible expedient, even to selling her
jewels and laces. The Duo de Mont*
pensier also loaned $1,000,000 to Don
Carlos, in hope to f orther the claims
of his wife to tho throne, and there is
general rejoioing in French circles that
he has lost it outright. Montpensier
has also seoared the love letters of the
queen mother, having bribed Don
Francois d'Assisis, her ex-husband, to
steal them for the reward of a valuable
diamond. By this infamous means
he expects, it is supposed, to over?

As Actress Dying of Starvation.
The New York Sun says that during a
recent < rehearsal of Henry V, at
Booth's Theatre, in that city, one of
the supernumeraries, a delicate, pale
faced woman, fell to the floor in a
fainting condition. When raked np
and asked if she was ill, she replied,
"I em starviug. It has been three
days since I tasted food." Mr. H. O.
Jariett, one of the proprietors, was
informed of the incident, and in a mo?
ments he was in a neighboring restan*
rant, giving an order for a hearty meal
for- the famishing 60porntixoerary.
When the girl had appeased her hun?
ger, Miss Wells, an sctress, went
among the actors snd actresses, and
oolleoted forty dollars for tho sofferer.
She took- her to her lodgings and
found there the girl's husband dying
of consumption, and her mother and
fonr little children,* all suffering from
the want of food. The actress, who
had not been on the stage before, was
the sole support of the family.

Important to Farmers.
O.M.Y FORTY DOLLARS A TOM
GUANAEANI GUANO,
AN important natural Guano?a genuine
Animal Deposit. A Cargo of 500 tons
huff on the way to this port. Tbis Guano
gave great satisfaction in Virginia and
Hmtb Carolina the past season. Circo
lar andcertiuoates sent on application.
Prof. Wilson, of Baltimore, Md., says of
this Guano: "By a critical examination of
tho analysis ot tho varions cargoes you
have imported, a striking feature is tbc
great regularity in tho per centage of the
important constituents essential for tho
production of all crops."
Prof. F. A. Gentb.or Philadelphia, Pr-nn.,
says: "iho Guauo is evidently of animal
origin, and tho minute bones which were
discovered in the same, indicate that it is
the result of the decay of bats, mice, ftc.
Tho quantity of organic matter which is
still present ia about 12 per cent., and this
yields about 1\ per cent, of ammonia. A
portion of the nitrogen is present as nitric
acid, of which about 3 per cent, were found.
All tho nitrogen present would be equiva?
lent to about 34 per cent, of ammonia. The
phosphoric acid in the Guano averaged
about 124 per cent., equal to 27 8 per cent.
of Bone Phosphate. A considerable quan?
tity of the phosphoric acid, however, is
present as so-called neutral Phosphate of
Lime, which, being slightly soluble in
water, renders the Guano as quick in Its
action as a corresponding quantity of Su?
perphosphates would do. The small per
centage of potash which was found In
analysis adds to its value. From all the
experiments which I have made of the
Guanahani Guano no doubt can exist that
it ia a valuable manure."
Prof. H. 0. White, of the Georgia State
Agricultural Society, says: "As shown by
tho analysis, this Gnano contains, In good
propoition, all the elements which are
generally considered as of value tor plant
food, and the forms and combinations in
which they are present are such as to ren?
der them available to and assimilable by
the plant. I should judge that the proper
use of this article for putpoees of fertiliza?
tion would ho attended with ereat profit."
Prot. Charles U. Shepard, Jr., iu a recent
analysis of this Gnano, says: "This Gcauo
(of animal origin) would appear from its
physical and chemical properties to an?
swer every reasonable expectation of a
commercial manure.
