TiligraulUc-Amerii-nn Matter*. Washington, February 13.?Dur? ing the debate in the Radical caucus, Speaker Blaine spoke in opposition to the proposition for a general suspen? sion of the writ of habeas corpus. He could eee no possible reason for giving the President the power to suspend the great writ at his discretion in Meine or in Michigan, because there was a disturbed condition of affairs in Louisiana or MiasiBsippi. If there is a condition of affiirs there to warrant it, let the suspension be connned to the disturbed districts. He oould not see why Southern States like Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, that were now trying to sustain good go _ . vernmont, should be menaoed and ex 1 cited by a suspension of habeas corpus; & moreover, the pending proposition b1 was unlimited as to time. The bill, if r it should become a law, would confer upon the President of the United States for all time to oome, whoever that President might be, the right and power to suspend the habeas corpus at bis sole and absolute discretion, in j any oity, County, District or State within the Union. He said he felt re? spect for President Grant, and would trust him aa far as he would any exe? cutive officer, but he woold never vote to confer this autooratio power upon any President now or hereafter. Even if no actual harm should come from it for a long period of years, the people would in the end become too mnoh familiarized with tbe Bnepecsion, and would lose that intense jeulonsy of in? dividual and personal liberty wbioh is the great characteristic of the Anglo Sixon race, and which all our legisla? tion should stimulate rather then re? press. fc Washington, February 15.?Capt. v> Henry, of the ship Observer, reports m that the Britiah brig Kewoden, Peter ' kin master, from Havana to Baltimore, went ashore. Some amasing points in Tiltou's orosH-examinatioo, last week, not re? ported by telegraph, are given in the New York papers. Whon asked who Oliver Johnson was, he answered that 1 he had been editor of the Anti-Slavery Standard and Independent, and con? cluded by saying, "and he is the man whom I put in the Christian Union to to help Mr. Beeoher to carry his case so that the publto eya could not aeo it." Mr. Evarts protested ogaiust this. Tilton said: "Mr. Evarts, if you ' wunt to know who Mr. Johnson is, 1 can give you a written biograpby of him, which he has prepared for me to ' use, to be printed after his death." This caused a laugh in the court room. , Again, in answer to a question whether he was acquainted with Mr. Johnson , now, Tilton said that he was not?that ' ho would not recognize him in the t street. Mr. Evarts said: "Bat you would know his person," and Tilton answered, "That is all I would oare to know." Mr. Evarts asked Tilton if Mr. Beeoher did not theo say, "Theo? dore, this is all a dream." Tilton an? swered: "He said, 'I am as one in a dream. I am in Dante's Inferno.'" Mr. Evarts said: "Are yoa sure he said Dante's Inferno?" Tilton re? plied, "I am not sore?I am certain." Mr. Evarts said, "I don's knew the distinction." Tilton said, "Excuse me, Mr. Evarts; I do not wish to bo captious. I am certain the sun rose this morning?I am sure it will rise to? morrow morning." The widow of the late Commander Cashing has forwarded to Gen. Alfred i Iverson, of Georgia, a sword that was presented to that gentleman by citizens of Columbus, Ga., when be was Lien tenant of the United States cavalry before the war, but which had been oaptnrsd by Commander Cashing in one of hie raids. Mrs. Ooshiog't kindness will be properly appreciated by Gen. Iverson, Bkeohek on Diiuqs and Medicines. ?Referring to tbe want of fidelity be* tween men end man, which begets a epirit of freed, he says: "Medicines are adulterated; bread is adulterated; coffee is mixed; yonr sugar is adulte? rated." This is all true; and we may add some atartliug revelations wich ro to the adulterations and mixture of medioines, whiob our people, with blind credulity, swallow upon faith: Brandreth's Pills coutain extract of pokeberries, saffron, cloves, aloes; Bad way's Relief contains tincture of popper, alcohol, camphor; your spices, too, are mixed with baw-du?t and ground-up musty ship crackers; oream of tartar is mixed with white earth and {dime, und cooking soda is a mix? ture of powdered washing soda. Your security, then, is to buy articles prepared at home, of wnrrunted purity and approved worth. Heinitsh's Baking Powder?cook's favorite?is tbe best and cheapest. Hcinithh's Pure Baking Soda and Cream Tartar, for bread and biscuit. Heinitsh's Pure Ground Pepper, Mustard and Cinnamon. Heinitsh's Pure Flavoring Extracts. Heinitsh's Blood Purifying Liver Pills cures Liver Complaint, Headache, Stomach Disorders, Indi? gestion and Constipation. Stanley's Cough Syrup cures all kinds of Coughs, Hoarseness, Bron? chitis, incipieut Consumption. Try it; don't delay. A Cough gets worse with every day's neglect. Medicines of all kinds, of warrauted quality, at tbe lowest prices. Make but one trial and bo convinced. f . . ? - ? - Consumptives, Take Notice. ? Every moment of delay makes your cure more hopeless, and much depends on the judicious choice of a remedy. The amount of testimony in favor o( Dr. Sohenok's Pulmonic Syrup, as u oure for consumption, far*exceeds uli that can be brought to support the pretensions of any other mediciue. See Dr. Schenck's Almanao, contain? ing tbe certificate.1! of many persous of the highest respectability, who have been restored to health, after being pronounced iucurable by physicians of acknowledged ability. Suheuck'?Pul mouio Syrup alone has ourod many, an these evidences will show; but the oure is often promoted by the employ? ment of two other remedies whiob Dr. Sohenok provides for the purpose. These additional remedies are Schenck's Sea Weed Tonic and Man iaake Pills. By the timely use of these medicines, according to direc? tions, Dr. Schecck certifies that most) in v case of consumption may be cured. Dr. Sohenok is professionally at his j principal office, corner Sixth and Arch ?treete, Philadelphia, every Monday, where all letters for advice must be ad? dressed. Rub ?ing his eyes, he stared again, aud, as jo atared, his terror grew. Calling his wife, he asked hoarsely: "Mirandy, what is that?" "What is what, Likey?' I Sniffles' name is Lycurgos, and his wife culls him Likey for short und iweet. "Why, that?that?thing in the oorner," said the frightened man, pointing at it with a hand that shook like a politician. Effect of Nervous Influence on the Heart.?Experiments mude with much care aud precision, show thut the circulation of the blood is accele? rated or retarded by nervons iuflaeuces in u maouer wbiuh before wm ouly vaguely suspected. More recently, tho investigations of this subject, made by M. Marcy, in relation to the beating of tho he irt aud its connection with muscular exercise, fever and the vio? lent omotions of anger, fear, joy, ?fco., all of which, he says, exercise a duect action ou the peripheric circulation, have txoited peculiar interest. M. Marcy does not consider variations in the beiitiug of the heart, to be due to any change iu the uotivity of the heart itself, but says it is certain that changes in the general circulation take place under the influence of moral emotions, the face becoming red or pale, etc. These well-known changes must entail variations in the frequency of the heating of the heart, so that the power which moderates or accelerates tho con!??notions of the heart, he thinks, can be uo other than the con tractillity of the vessels of the whole body by nervous energy. -? ? Tbe idea in to toru electricity to the pur? pose-, of a motor for railway truine: "The principle is the construction of driving wheels of enormous electro1 mago itcs, which diverge from the cen- j tre in tbe same form as the spokes of an ordinary wheel, tbe poles of oacb magnet terminating with tbe outer circumference. Tbe electric circuit is complete us the magnet impinges upon the steel rails of the track. As the poles of each magnet forming the driving-wheel approach the track, an euormous magnetio attraction is ex? erted, and as they pass the centre, or perpendicular point of the maguol upon the track, the current is cat oil from each particular magnet and the attraction abated. By tbe multiplica? tion of driving-wheels of this descrip? tion, the inventor expects to acquire any degree of power requisite, and accomplish nny rate of speed at which a railroad car is capable of traveling, with no possible dauger of the loco? motive's leaving the track. In place] of the cumbersome steam boiler and tender loaded with coul, the looomo tive will curry n magnetic battery of | immense power."
