Mexican Affairs.?The conflict be?

personal. The Protestauts have been
very active lately in Mexico, and our
despatches from the capital show that
tho number of reformed churches is
increasing. The uxpulsiuu of the Sis?
ters of Charity has been bitterly re?
sented, aud the pledge of the Catholic
women reveals intense feeling. It is a
pity that a more tolerant pnblio opi?

petual religious wars. No country, can

sonally, and that indemnity is to be
reudered to loyal subjects. If the in?
surgents can withstand these measures
of confiscation and attack, sustained
by reinforcements from .Spain, they
will prove that they are entitled to re?

dependence. We doubt that General
(Jonoha will do more in person than
he has achieved by his deputies.
The Grand Jury of Marion County
declares the jury law to be a nuisance
That is .where their heads were level.
The ignorance or venality of one man
can deprive a County of a court for a
whole year. On numerous occasions
have we known of lawyers, wituesses
and jurors being brought to the court
house towns, at great publio aud pri?
vate expense, only to find that a court
could not be legally held because of
tbo stupidity of a jury commissioner.
There should be u change made that
would render such things impossible

practicable, an enlargement of - the
water mains on Taylor, Washington
and Gervais streets East, and an ex?
tension on Gervais street West, as far
as tho.railroad depots. On inspect!on

engines, we findrjtnat the Vigilant has
but 250 feet of good hose, the Enter?
prise but 800, and the Congaree none.
Wo would recommend that 1,010 feet
of good hose be procured aud dis?
