Mr. Weed refers to hie loyal record, and says that his flrat so? licitude, after. the death of Mr. Lin OOln, was (0, asoertaiu and carry out his policy. :\ Bat when attacked he was, according to Mr. Weed; aggressive end belligerent, hit out right and left, and was like the dog in Dombey and Son, who was forever "barking round the corner at an enemy he had never, seen.** Mr. Weed might have added that the subject of his letter is like a fierce dog in another respect, that some of his enemies whom he has seen are trying, npou- his re appearance, to pat him On the head and utter soothing exclamations of "good dog," "poor fellow," and, the like. Whether tbia will propitiate a "dog" whose brain and memory are quite equal to hia oombativeneas, remains to be seen. Thb Txdb Ttjbnin a.?It is to be hoped that Governor Chamberlain's proclamation disarming the military organisations in EdgeQeld County, South , Carolina, will be enforced. There have been outrages perpetrated by the negro militia of that County suoh as, if committed by white men, would have been . .made the ground long ago of anieppeal for the military interference of the Federal Govern? ment. Governor Chamberlain would seem not to be unobservant of public opinion, nor of the significance of re? cent elections in South Carolina and other Southern States. The asser? tion of Mr. Delany, lste candidate for Lieutonant-Goveruor of Sooth Caro? lina oh the independent Republican and Conservative tioket, to the effect that the negroes are weary of carpet? bag leaderships, seems to have been confirmed by developments in the looal politics of that section. Gov. Chamberlain will be applauded by the good men, of all parties, and will de? monstrate his political sagaoity also, if he manfully upholds the issue which he has made with the disturbers of the pesoe in his own party. The time is coming when the whole country will recollect only with shame and horror that Hwfees instincts among the ig? norant, colored people against the whites have been pandered to from the mbft.debased and vindictive po? litical and personal motives. ? * [Baltimore Sun, The details of the recent enow slides in Utah are of thrilling interest. These avalanches are caused by the wind sweeping up on one side of the moun? tain, and forming a large drift just over tbe ridge on the opposite side, which soon becomes too heavy, and, detaching ittelf, plunges down the mountain, increasing in size until a moving mass of snow, covering acres, < and trorn ten to forty feet thick, sweeps with tbe rapidity ot lightning dowu into canons, carrying everything bofore it.
