... How Franklin Seoured a Beat.
Dr. Franklin owed much of his cx
if??rdi??ry success to kc?n insight
into human nature and a sagacity that
quickly'perceived tho best and-readi?
est methods of attaining a desired end.
To bo sure, many of'his " strategetic
pjovoroonta " were not commendable;
but they were more' humorous than
injurious, of which the following is a
characteristic specimen i i ? iijfj
In the' ^ear-W^, Franklin visited
Boston, and on his return to Philadel?
phia,, at every, stopping ho was beset
with'o?lcious inquiries for his name,
business, etc, on which ho determined
beforeliand wiihV such intcrroga-'
tones in future. At the next tavern
he announced himself' as Benjamin
Franklin, from Boston to Philadelphia,
a printer not worth-a dollar, eighteen
years of age, a^ingJeimap;Beeking my
fortune, etc.; and this singular intro
duction checked all, further inquiries
and' effectually repulsed 'the daring
propensity of Yankee inquisitiveness.
At,ono of tho public houses, tho firo
place was -surrounded by men so
closely packed .our traveler could not
approach near enough to feel any of
its agreeable warmth, and .being cold
oiid chilled, ho called out:
" Hostler, have you any oysters r"
" Yes, oir," said tho man.
".Well then give my horse a peck."
."What, give your horse oystors?"
cried the wondering skeptic.
MYe8," retorted Franklin, "give
him a peck of oysters."
The hostler carried out tho oysters,
and many of the occupiers of the fire?
place went with him to witness tho
great curiosity of a horse eating oys?
ters. Franklin seated himself com?
fortably before the fire and derived
much satisfaction and enjoyment from
hia'fuhny experiment. ' Soon the man
camo in, and the company* with rueful
faccu; expressed most decided dissatis?
faction at their disappointment.
" Tho horbo would not eat tho oys?
ters, sir!" and tbey had lost their
cozy, comfortable, warm seats.
? Well," said Franklin, "if the horse
won't eat them I'll cat them myself,
and you may try him with a peok of
oats."
Discovery of Guano,?Extensive
beds oi guano have been recently dis?
covered in Peru, to the South of the
Province of Tarapaca. An examina?
tion of ,the beds, made by two survey?
ors, sent out by the Central Board of
Engineers of Lima, Peru, has brought
out n report showing thatseveraHarge
beds of guano, of excellent quality,
exist in that locality. Those which
have been surveyed are supposed to
contain nearly eight million tons; one ]
of 'thorn alone contains fivo million
tons of fine quality. Those discoveries ,
not Only remove all fear of a present
failure in tho supply of gaano, but
indicate that there are yet other undis?
covered beds in cxi?tenco which will
provide a practically inexhaustible
?upply. ^ .V
Men bow before talent, even if un
associatcd with goodness; but hciwc.cn ,
these two wo must make an everlasting
distinction. When on.jc the idolatry
of talent enters, then faro well to spir?
ituality; when men ask their teachers
not for that, which 'will make them
moro hum hlc and godlike, buifor the
excitement of an intellectual banquet,
then farewell to Christian progress.
