Dbuidism SttDTj Preserved in
Wales ? I have jaet obtained, through
a weieh friend, a few items oonoerniug
a myBtoriouB ecot in the South of
Wales, . concerning which no record
whatever exists, bat which I believe to
be the very lust remnant of the anoiunt
Draidio religion. The people belong?
ing to this little sect are few and poor;
they dwell scattered among the bills in
the neighborhood of Fontypridd. They
gather together only twice in every
year?on the summer and the winter
solBtioe. They then ascend a moun?
tain called Egiwisilau. This moun?
tain's name seems derived from Eglwys
(French, Eglise,) Ohurob, and Ilan, a
height; but the mysterious religionists
say that the latter word?Ilan?is the
name of their founder. The mountain
is connected with antiquity by having
on its top a holy (rocking) stone, and
near its base the remains of on old
(so-called. Draidio) temple, circular,
bat with a long, sinuoas line of stones,
saoh as are thought by some a reliot of
serpent worship. When these brethren
assemble &i the mountain's base at the
eoletico, they are headed by an aged
man, who bears in his hand a long
wand. At the top of this wand is a
?mall sphere witb three probgs, like
divergent rays, issuing from tbe aide
of it. My informant asked one of the
solstitiala what was the meaning of
this sphere and its three prongs. He
replied that the sphere was "the
sphere," and as for the three prongs,
"yon will find three in everything," he
said, '.'in leaves and trees particularly."
The pilgrims march silently after their
aged leader with the wand up the
mountain, and when they arrive tbero
he preaohes to tbem a strange sort of
mixture of materialism and fetishism.
[London Cor. Cincinnati Commercial.
The tannel ander the Alps, at Mont
Conio, having hcen finished in 1871,
Germany at ones saw tbe immense ad?
vantage it would be to France. Ger?
many now has no ontlet into Italy at
all comparable to it as a commercial
highway. Bo, in 1871, Bismarck, witb
his usual far-sightednesa, gave orders
for a rival tannel to be oommenced at
the Mount St. Gothard. This was
began in October, 1872, and is now
being constructed ander the samo sys?
tem as that which gave to the world
the Mont Gehis. It will be twelve
miles long, and will be completed in
1882. It will level, so to say, ono of
the most difficult and dangerous peaks
of tbe whole Alpine chain, and, com
merioially, it will be of chief bonent
to Germany, although at tbe earns
time, another advantageous link for all
Europe; for, just as moro Atlantic
cables there are, the more Alpine tun
nets there are, tbe better for all. It is
estimated that tbe cost of the St. Go?
thard tunnel will exceed that of the
Mont Oonie tunnel, and no one oan
foretell to a nicety what it will cobI, he
anticipated expenditures may turn out,
in reality, to bo at fault.
1 Tbe'Raadans have gone mad over
Patti again. At Mosoow, recently, tbe
receipts of the opening night were
S7.5Q0, and when it' is stated that in
the coarse of the evening she was
called before tbe curtain no less tban
sixty times, and that upwards of 2,000
bouquets were showered upon her,
some idea ;may be formed of the tri?
umph. , At tbe conclusion of the opera
Madame Patti was presented with five
splendid stars of rubies and diamonds,
and a msgnificent ornament consisting
entirely of large brilliauts.
