The Dbad of the Yeab ? The ne?

does not contain, so many distinguish* d
men as that of 1878, bot the list is
still a long one, and contains many
names linked with oar political and

Charles Sumoer, ex-President Fill

The Pobuo Debt?The large In
nrrtoRB in tho nnblio debt for the laet
month of tnore than 83.600.(H 0 is the
cause of no surprise in financial cir
olee. Under present oiroamstanceB, it I
cannot bo expected that the debt eau j
be decreased. The revenoes of tbej
Qovernment are not more tbao suffi?
cient'to pay the interest on the debt
and the current expenses. The total
de?reano of 'the debt in the last fix
months has been less than 85110,000.
In the next six months, it may not bej
so much.
Reliable"estimates put the cotton
crop of 1874 at a little over 3,500,000
bales. Tho yield per acre is reported
leSs than* in 1873. In most of thn
States the weather for ripening und
gathering the fop orop has been very
favorable. The reports are nearly
unanimous id stating that the propor?
tion of lint to need is large.
