an ORDINANCE TO "REaUIiATE LICENSES
' * ? fob the Year 1875.
Section 1. Be it ordained, by the
Mayor and Aldermen of tlie city ofh Cot
bia, in Council assembled, That every
person, firm, company or corporation,
engaged in, or intending to be en?
gaged in, any trade, business or pro?
fession hereinafter mentioned, shall
obtain, on or before the 6th day of
January, A. D. 1870, a license there?
for, iu manner provided. Those com?
mencing business after the 6th of Jan*
uary, Bhall obtain a lioense before en?
tering upon that business.
Sbo. 2. Every person, firm, com?
pany or corporation required by this
ordinance to obtain a license to en?
gage iu any trade, business or profes?
sion, for which a lioense is required,
shall register with the City Olerk and
Treasurer, first, his or her name or
Btyle, and iu case of a firm or com?
pany, the name of the several persons
constituting such firm or company,
and their places of business; second,
the trade, business or profession for
whloh a license is required; third, the
place where such trade or'profession is
carried on; it a wholesale or retail
dealer4n goods, wares and merchan?
dise, the amount, extent and volae of
business intended to be carried on, in?
cluding distilled spirits; all of which
shall be given' under oath.
Sso. 8. If any person or persons ex?
ercise or carry on any trade, business
or profession, {or the exeroisiug, carry?
ing on or doing of which a license is
required by this ordinance, without
first registering and taking ont such
license, as in that behalf required, he,
she or they, besides being liable to the
payment of. the.license, shall be sub?
ject to a penalty not exoeeding $10, on
conviction before the Mayor or any
oourtof competent jurisdiction; one
half of the penalty, alter deduoticg ex?
penses of the prosecution, to be paid
to the person who first informs of the
matters and thing whereby the penalty
is recovered, and the other half to the
city.

at the time the lioense is granted the
name of the party Obtaining the same,
the length- of time covered by .said
license, r together with the amount
charged therefor; and the party re?

same posted in some conspicuous place
where hie business, trade or profession
is carried on. Any evasion of the pro?
visions of this section shall, on convic?
tion before, the Mayor, be puuishuble
by fine not exoeeding S-il).
Sec 5. The lioonaes granted under
this ordinance shall pot authorize the
person or persons or firm, company or
corporation mentioned therein, to ex
ereise or carry on the trade, baaineas
or profession specified in such lioense
in-any other place than that mentioned
therein, unless permitted so to do by
the Mayor. A lioense granted on and
after Janaary 1st, 1875, shall continue
in force until the 1st of January fol?
lowing; and all licenses grauted after
the 1st of January, A. D. 1875, shall
be issued upon payment of a rateable
portion of the whole amount of money
imposed for such licenses: Provided,
however, That no lioense shall be
granted for a period less than three
months, though the time to the end of
the year be less than that. Each li
cense grauted'shall be dated on the
first day of the month on which the
liability therefor occurred, and the
amount to be paid therefor shall be
computed therefrom until the end of
the year, exoept aa hereinbefore men?
tioned: Provided, That after a license
is granted by the city uo portion
. thereof wilt be refunded.
Seo. 6. Upon the removal of any
person or persons from tba house or
premises at which the trade, business
or profession mentioned iu such li?
cense was authorized, it may and shall
be lawful forf&o Mayor to authorize,

provided for, a license tax of 310 to
320: Provided, further. That where
two or more branches of basiuess, not
necessarily connected, ai'o conducted
in uue establishment, a license shall
be churged und collected for each
brauch of business so conducted, as
specified iu this ordinance. Dogs?

ning at large, end not having on the
city badge or collar for the current
year, and for every dog so taken up by

for the same.
Sec. 8. That the proceeds of tbo
taxes levied and collected, with the
license tax, be applied by the City
Treasurer to the current expenses of
the years 1874 and 1875, oommenoiug
1st April, 1871.
Seo. 9. All ordinances and parts of
ordinances conflicting with this ordi?
