Oonsumpxioh of Smokb.?The pro? prietors of the Cleveland Herald have recently applied as apparatus to their office ohimnoy, which is claimed to be a perfect preventive of smoke and a great saver of fuel. The discovery, which tho Herald thinks is a very valu? able one, was purely accidental. A mechanic of that city was trying to ao cure a better draft for a sluggish fire, and'the thoughtoeourred to him, after other devices had failed, to try the ef? fects of steam. A small pipe was made to conduct the dry "steam" from the top of the boiler to the upper part of the furuftce, whioh it entered in two small jets, Btriking downward on the burning fuel. No sooner was the steam injected into the furnaoe, than the sluggish, smoky fire sprang up into a clear, bright yellowish and intensely hot flame, filling the whole furnace with A load roar. The man found he had not only secured a strong draft, bat something muoh more important, a smokeless fire. As an experiment, the apparatus was attached to the fur? naoe of the Berald engine, whioh was oonverted from a neighborhood nni sanoe of smoke aud soot iuto a smoke 089 fire. An improvident Danbary youth en? tertains a high appreciation for the State prison, whioh ho regards "us the only place where a fellow is not dunned for his board und washing every Saturday night." In despair a Freooh capitalist has invested all his money in cosmetics. He says, that national obligations de? pend on politics, and politics are un? certain, and every reoogpised security has similarly some weak point, bot coquetry is human, flourishes every? where and may always be counted upon. "Is it true that since the introduc? tion of lady operators on your lines there isn't so much vulgar talking over the wires?" asked a female suf? fragist of a Weatem Union official. "Yes, ma'am," he answered; "but the conversation makes np in length what it laoks in breadth." A Texan, named WyBer, who broke one of bis arms while wrestling with a friend, is still a Wyser, but'the doctor says it will be some time before he will be a better man.
