The daily phoenix. (Columbia, S.C.) 1865-1878, December 20, 1874, Image 1
apprwji?UT* audience a*semb|e4 at
Girardey's Opera nouse, last night, to
hear the leoture of Admiral Secntae*
upon ''The Cruise of the Alabama."
At the hoar of 8 the oartain rote, and
after ? formal introduction, tbo Ad?
miral began the recitation of the story
of the famous man-of-war. He rapidly
ran over it, telling of its construction,
by Laird, its escape from English
waters to the Azores Islands, the work
of shipping her battory, mustering in
the orew, the ceremony of ohriBtening
the ship, and the beginning of her
work of destroying the enemy's pro?
perty. But the lsotnre, long as it wbb,
hardly touched upon the thrilling epi?
sodes in the life of the ship. Muoh of
the leoture was devoted to a defence of
the charge that the ship was a pirate,
and the Admiral read eztraotB from
speeches recently made in the Senate
by Republican Senators, who took the
ground that she was not. The Admi?
ral explained why a sailor always calls
a ship "she:" First, because she al?
ways looks best when freshly painted;
second, because she always puts the
bsst foot foremost, when she has on
new sails; third, beoause she always
looks well when in stays; and fourth,
beoause she always brings news home
from abroad. He gare an interesting
account of life on board his Fessel, the
duties, the discipline and the amuse
mentB of officers and orew. He evi?
dently rested under the impression that
his audience had read his history of
the oruiso, and, therefore, only made
a passing illusion to his fight with and
sinking of a Federal man-of-war off
Galveston, his capture of the rioh Caii
fornian, the "Ariel," and twenty
others of the most interesting inci?
dents of the two yeors' oruise of the
ship.?Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel.
The report of the chief signal officer
of the army states that eighty-four and
four-tenths of the deductions pub?
lished as "probabilities" in "the news?
papers, during the last year, have been
verified. This is an improvement on
the record of the preceding year. Of
the total number of cautionary signals
displayed by order of the signal bu?
reau, seventy-five per cent, have been
?afterwards reported as justified. In
the oases of failure following the dis?
plays, the winds did not attain at the
plaoo of display the degree of violence
anticipated. In no case has any great
storms swept over the ports of the
United States without pre-annonnce
meul, so that the errors have all been
on the safe side. Farmers' bulletins
are now printed daily and displayed in
frames at over U.OOO post offices, in
large agricultural districts, all over tho
United States. They are compiled
and sent out to centres of distribution
at 1 A. M., and are displayed in their
frames at the average honr of 11 A- M.
Biver aud canal reports are also bul?
letined and published in newspapers
to protect navigators and merchants
from sudden and severe floods or from
the effeots of a sudden closing of canal
navigation by the formation of ice.
The effort at Washington, whioh is
engaging the attention of leading Re?
publicans, to secure some legislation
this session in settlement of the
financial question, and looking ex?
plicitly in the direction of specie pay?
ments, has also the sympathy of the
Republican journals of tbe country.
The New York Times says that, look?
ing at the matter even from the stand?
point of party interest alone, there
could be nothing more advantageous.
The question more important than all
others is tho financial one. If tho
Republican party oau settle it perma?
nently and promptly, snoh action will
go far toward establishing tbe party in
the oonfidenoe of tbe country. The
despatches indicate that the measure
most acceptable to Congressmen is
one declaring for specie payments a
day certain, and authorizing tbe Secre?
tary of the Treasury to borrow money
for tbe purpose. This is a simple mea?
sure, and might be perfeoted to meet
the whole question. But we beg to
urge on Congress the faot tbnt the me?
thod is by no means so important as a
deoisive effort to reach the deeired
end.
-.
John Bull, with a somewhat wry
face, has finally consented to assist at
the oelebration of the hundredth an?
niversary of the biggest thrashing he
ever had. We hope, however, that
this phase of the Centennial will not be
obtruded upon tbe English commis?
sioners every day during the exhibi?
tion, beoause it might get a little mo?
notonous. What a blessed privilege it
will be, to be sure, for all these poor
foreigners to come aud see Brother
Jonathan exult and blow his horn for
six mortal months in tho diffident and
soothing style for which he is so noted!
And how they will go home and abuse
