As this vote is the first that has been

that the Republicans were much
weaker than they were supposed to be.

sure, while their opponents polled 553

true republicanism than radicalism,

but certain it is that the Commune is a
skeleton which is goiug to be rattled
in the ears of all Republicans in
France for a long time, aod especially
of that Radical wiug whiah showed
lenienoy to the enemies of society aud
of mankind.

The report of the OommiHaioners ap?
pointed to wind np the nffdirs of the
Freedman'a Bank baB beau ready for
over s month. It makes a oompleto
exhibit of the condition of the bank,
and shows the amount aud character
of its indebtedness and assets. Large
portions of these assets are of a kind
not authorized by the charter, and
considerable losses will be sustained
on this account, but the principal
losses will be due to injudicious loans,
made obiefly in the South. The in?
debtedness of the bank amounts to
about $3.000,000, for which thero ate
assets amounting on their face value
to ninety-six per cent. The commis?
sioners attempt no estimate of the real
valoe of the assets, as that is a matter
nuascertaiuuble, and whiah will greatly
depend upon the mode of collection.
All the readily convertible aBsots were
disposed of prior to the suspension of
the bank, aud other portions of the
assets had been hypothecated, and tho
commissioners had to raise money to
redeem them and save them from
Sacrifice. These facta indicate that i he
settlement of the affairs of the bunk
will be a tedions process. The com?
missioners have now about $90.000 tie
posited with the Secretary of tho
Treasury, and to make even a dividend
of twenty per cent, to the 72.000 de?
positors of the bank wonld require
$800,000.

homes in largo numbers, expecting a
general assault at every moment; that
four of the supposed perpetrators of
the deed have been arrested and bound
over under bonds of $6.000 each, to
appear for trial at the next term of the
United States Distriot Court.

terrible condition of his army. The

the night of his arrival in front of
Washington he had a conference with
