Thb Last Dying Manifkotations of
R?t>ioat. Dbteotuy.?It may aoaod
slangy, vulgar, nay, blasphemous, bot
ws cannot belp saying that Old Johu
Brown's oonl has ceased "niarobiog
on," aad is now quietly seated in
Abraham's bosom, looking down with
exquisito Radical joy opoo the last
dying manifestations of RtdioO devil?
try being enacted in Edgefield. Aud
?what is the soape upon which this
gloating son! now gazes? Detective
United States Oommia ioners,detective
United States Marshals, detective
United States marderers, detective
United States dragoons, all forging
ohains and iron baudonfft for the
white people of E Igefiold. It sees u
pale, olammy, nasty wretch established
in a room in oar Court House, for the
purpose of bearing trivial, tramped op
lies from dirty, ignorant, nngratefni,
malicious negroes. It s eB these ma
Hoious creatures flocking into him
from all parts of the Oonnty. He la a
no-called United States Commissioner,
and bis name is Aiton, -or Eton. It
sees the gigantic brute, Hnbburd. with
tbo inbred brutality of the jackal,
swaggering abont our street, arrestiug
quiet and unoffending gentlemen, di
xsoting military movements, and send?
ing off wagon loads of wretched ne?
groes to Columbia, to act as suborned
witnesses in tbe United States (Joart.
It sees the ineffable scoundrel, McDo
viis, careering aronud tbe square in a
bnggy drawn by a fiery grey, gazing
upon tbe scene which be and Paris
Simkins have so euooessfally brought
upon tbe stage. It sees tbe County
Auditor, Belaoger, keeping those im?
maculate Hkirts of his ?8 white as dnv- n
snow, bv hugger-muggering gleefully
with the great avengers. It bears the
beating of the reveille at anwouted
hours, and sees United States troops
march off in the black midnight, to ar?
rest old men in their beds. It seen
these old men arise at early dawn aud
find tbeir houses surrounded by armed
soldiers. It sees them being pulled
and harried across tbe country as pri?
soners. It sees men flying from tbeir
hom.es. It sees womeu and young
children traveling about alone in car?
riages, with trunks and baggage, seek?
ing a safer refuge than their own roof.
It sees hordes of idle, angry, insolent
negroes hanging about our public
places, eagerly watching the course of
events, and cursing wildly that the
avengers are so slow. It Bees anxiety
and humiliation in every white face.
It sees business prostrated and indus?
try paralyzed. Tbe sonl of Old John
Brown is tbe soul of tbe Radical party
of South Carolina. And all this does
tbat happy sonl now see. Happy, but
base, stupid, short sigh tad. Making
vivid capital for powerful enemies, and
hurrying on tbe day when it shall be
finally said: "Thou fool! this night
shall tby soul be required of thee!"
Tbe citizens of Edgefieid actually
arrested tbos far are Col. Robert B.
Hughes, Rev. E. T. Walker, Col. Jobu
Cheatbam, Mr. John H. Hollingsworth
and Mr. John Colgan, Sr. Moat of
them are already in Columbia to ap?
pear before the United States Court.
In the meantime squads oi United
States troops, transformed temporarily
into cavalry, have raided, by day and
by night, into tbo country, but have
returned in most cases without their
prey. We bad thought that the duty
of United States troops, under these
circumstances, was to assist the United
States or State authorities in case of
resistance, but it seems tbat their fuuc
tious aro for more comprehensive. In
no case has there been any resistance.
In faot, we have lived in Edgefieid ull
oar lives, and never knew a case of re?
sistance to law or violenoe to an officer
of tbe law. That is so.
Col. R. B. Hughes was arrested
while in town, and immediately gave
bail. The charge against him la inti?
midation and bis acouser is a negro
named Fuller Oliphant. Remember
this name. And notwithstanding tbe
alleged intimidation, the negro did ac?
tually vote, quietly, tbe Radical ticket.
The charge against Mr. Walker is in?
timidation, and yet his accuser voted
the Radical ticket, and is safe and
sound. CoK Cheatbam and Mr. Hol?
lingsworth awoke at S o'clock in tbe
morning and found their houses sur?
rounded by United States soldiers.
Again the ohurgo is intimidation, and
again their licensers voted the Radical
tioket, aud uro well and hearty. The
charge against Mr. Colgan is selling to
baooo without u liosusu. Mr. Colgau
has had a pet negro named Butler
Rors. Now aud then he bought a plug
of tobacco in the village at '20 cents
for Dudley, aud let him have it at ex?
actly tin same. He paid Dudley $10
a mouth and fed him; aud when Dadley
came down from picking eighty
pounds of cottou a day to twenty, he
discharged him. Henoo Dudley'a
wrath. Aad thus it it*I Aud such is
the character of the charges! And such
the grounds of arrestl And yet these
Altona, HubbardH, &o., ?fco., .fco., are
white men, apparently with power of
reason. Verily, thoy ongbt to have
hind legs and tails, hoofs and horns.
And in these days of unnatural doings,
we would not be surprised to see them
devolope these ornaments of tbe brute,
creation.
Siuce writing tbe above, and as we
go to press, we learo tbat our fellow
citizens, Messrs. Wm. Parkman and
Charles Holmes, of the Red Hill sec?
tion, have been brought in, under ar?
rest, by a squad of United States
soldiers.
Let us tell this tale. It will sound
well to pious, decent Northern people.
Tbe Rov. E. T. Walker, at tbe break?
ing ont of tbe war, was a wealthy
land-holder of Beaufort. Driven from
his home, be took refnge with his
family in Edgefieid, where, in his
youth, ho bad preaobed. For thirteen
long years bis fair possessions by the
sea have been in the bands of negroes
and carpet-baggers, while be bas lived

in exile aud poverty, undergoing trials I
ami hardslips of which the outside \
world bus bnt little idea. He is piooe,
pore, generous, ohariUble. For two
or three years he has lived upon a
farm, and bis head employee bus been
an elderly negro man uamed Robin
Yoong; a bad oburaoter always, al?
though his employer, in his charity,
did not. believe it. Tins Robin Young,
after eatiog the Rev. Mr. Walker's
limbs almost literally off, and seeing
but little left, hurries in to C<>mmis
?iouer Aitou with a flippant affidavit,
and Hubbard forthwith arrests the |
reverend gentleman while sitting in n
friend's office; a geutleman whose |
character as man, citizen and Christ?
um, is indubitably above all reproach.
Mr. Walker gave bond, and is in Go
iumbia to appear before the United
States Gonrt. Almighty God I is this

It is represented that the President |
is tired of the continued calls from

Several who bavo talked with him say'
tbat he will urge with much earnest?
