BY JULIAN A. SELBY.
A Rome letter details a receot bold
Btroke of tome Italian brigands, per?
petrated in tbe immediate vicinity of
the Eternal City. Mgr. Tbeodoli, one
of the ehanoellors of the Vatican, was
taking his accustomed walk after diu
IXit near the convent of the Certoro,
i l company with two of the brothers
of that religions bouse, wheu live
armed men, who had boun lying iu
wait in a neighboring wood, presented
themselves, and with the exclamation,
"Ah, nt last, after three months' waten,
we have found onr opportunity," or?
dered the prelato to accompany them
to the monntaiu. Resistance was use?
less, and Mgr. Tbeodoli resigned him?
self to his fate, and his two compa?
nions hurried back in terror to the
oonvent. The eame night a messen?
ger oame down from tbe mountain
bearing a note written by the prelate's
own hand, eaying that he was in tbe
power of the brigands, and that fifty
thonaand francs was set upon his life.
It was added that no alarm must be
given until the sum was raised, ns his
head wonld be the possible forfeit of
any surprise. The monks of tho abbey
scraped together four thousand francs,
which was forwarded post haste to tbo
bandits. But tho reply Bent back was
that not a sou Icbb than tbe price ect
would be accepted as redemption
money.

The Fiji Islands which tbe British
Government have just annexed, are a
gronp of one hundred and .fifty-four
islands, sixty-five of tbem being inha?
bited. They are situated in the South
Pacifio Ocean, between the fifteenth
and twentieth degrees of South lati?

of considerable size, Anna Levu and
Vita Levu, which have a surface re?
spectively of about 5,000 and 3,000
square miles. The Fiji Ldauds are
fertile, bat heretofore have had very
little attention given them by this
country. Now that her Majesty
Queen Victoria has taken tho plaoe of
tho latest successor of "Hoky-poky

they cited him to appear before tbem

8eegers' vs. Cincinnati Beer.
THE Cincinnati Gazette makes the aato
nibbing announcement that Cincinnati
beer is no longor pure, but adulterated with
molasses, sugar of starch, fusel oil and the
poisonous Colchicum. The Commissioner
of Agricultnre, in his report for 18G5, says
that Prof.Mapos, of New York, analysed
the beor from a dozen different breweries,
and found all of it adulterated. Cocoulus
fudicus and unx vomica entered largely
iuto its composition.
J. C. SFEGEBS guarantees hie beer tobt

it, but brews from the best barley, mar
