BY JULIAN A. SELBY. Smith ttnd Jones. One winter there came to Trenton, New Jersey, two men, named Smith und Jones, both of whom had designs npou the Legislature. Jones hud a bad wife, and was ia lovo with auother pretty woman, who, by-the-by, was a widow, with sparkling black eyes. Smith hud a good wife, plump us a robin, good us an auge), aud the mo? ther of tea ohiidreu. Smith did nut want to get divorced, but sought to' get a charter for a turnpike from Pig'? Run to Terrapin Hollow. So, with theso different objects, they came to Treutou, and addressed the assembled wisdom there with the usual argu? ments: 1st. Oyster suppers, with a rich Luck-ground of eteuk aud venison. 2d. Liquors in abuodauce, from the stunning "Jersey lightning" to the bubbling ohampugne. To speak ia plain prose, Jones guve a Champagne Bupper, and Smith fol? lowed with a ohampugne brenkfusb. Under the molltfyiug iuilueuce of these tempting repasts, the wise law? makers passed both the divorce and turnpike bills, and Jones and Smith? * with a copy of eaoh bill iu parchment in their pookets?weut rejoicing to their homes. "My love," said Smith, wheu he was onoe more comfortably eusoouced before his own domestic hearthstone, and speaking to his wife, who was ministering to the necessities of the youngest offspring, "I am one of the directors of the Pig's Run aud Terra? pin Hollow Turnpike, and will be President, my dear. It will quite set ns up in life. We will send our chil? dren to boarding-school, and live in style off the tolls. Here's the charter, duoky." "Let me see it, pet," said the wife, who was the best of wives, with plump? ness and good nature beaming all over her face. She nestled on Smith's shoulder, and threw her arm lovingly about his neck, as she helped him ex .1_ UIUIUO LUD LJMUUUiDUih Suddenly Smith's visage grew long. His wife's looked blank. Smith was, not generally profane, bat now he k ripped out a fearful oath.. \ "Blast it, wife!" he ahonted, furi? ously, "those scoundrels at Trenton have divorced oal" It was too true. The parchment he held was a bill of divorce, in which the names of Smith and his wife y^ peared in frightful big letters. &Lr*. Smith wiped ber eyes with the corner of her apron, as she exolaimed: "Oh, dear, here's a. tnrnpikel Mr. Smith, with the whole ten of our chil? dren staring me in the face, I ain't your wife." Here the voioo of the poor woman became choked with sobs, aud her ut teranoes were too indiatinot to be re? corded. As for Smith, he cursed away at such a rate as would have oonvinced any spectator of the propriety of send? ing him a missionary. Although the night was dark, and the denizens of the village had retired to their beds, Smith bid his wife put on her bonnet, and, arm iu arm, they proceeded to the bouse of the olergymau of their cburob. "Qooduoss. bless me!" exclaimed the mild, good man, as he Haw them enter, Smith looking like the last June shad, aud Smith's wiio's face all streaked with tears, "what is the mat? ter?" "The mutter is, I want you to marry us right off," replied Smith. "Marry you I" exclaimed the aston? ished olergymau, with expanded fin? gers aud wonderiug eyes; "are you drunk or crazy?" "Neither. The fact is, Brother Good wiu, some scoundrels at Treutou have, unknown to us, divorced me from my wife, and ube is the mother of all my children." Well, the minister, Boeing tbe condi? tion of tilings, roiirri. d them over again, and would uot take nny fee. The biet, is, he wus noxious to be alone, to clink be could give vent to a sup i pressed lauyh that was shaking him all over. Smith and his wife weut home aud kissed every one of their ten children, und the little Smiths uever knew that their jfcther and mother had been made strangers to each other by legislative enactment. Meanwhile, aud on the self-same night, Jones returned to Ins native town, aud sought the Qua puir of black eyes which he hoped shortly to call his own. Tbe pretty widow sat on a sofa, a white7 hundkercbief tied care Jesely about her round, white throat, und ber black hair iu silky waves ngainst her rosy cheek. "Divorce ia tbu word!" erictl Jones, playfully patting tbe double obin. "L'bo fact is, Eliza, I urn rid of that woman, and you and I will bo murried to-night, I know how to nmusge those fellows at Treutou. A champagne sup? per (or wus it a breakfast?) did our ousiuebH with them. Put on your ? ?outlet uud let uh go to tbe preacher's at once, deurent." The widow (who was among widows sb pi-itches aro among upplos) put ou her bonnet und took Jones'arm, and? "Just look how handsome it is put on the parchment," cried Jones, poll? ing the dooument out before her; here's the law which suys that Jack [E DAI 'Let ( CO] .TnncK und Ann Caroline Junes uro two! Look at ill" Putting her plump, gloved hand on his shoulder, she did look at it. "Oh, dearl" sho exclaimed, with her rose-bud lips, and aaukback, half fuint ing, on the sofa. "Oh, blazes!" cried Jones, rumpling tho parchment in his bund; "here's lots of champagne and happiness gone to ruin." It was a hard case. Iustea i of beiug j divorced und at liberty to marry the I widow, Jacob Jouus was simply, bi? lbo Legislature of New Jersey, incor? porated into a turnpike compuny, with tue liberty of cous.ructing a turnpike from Burliugtuu to Bristol. Wheu you refleot that Burlington and Bristol are located about u mile upart, on op posito sides of the Delaware ltiver, you will peroeive the extreme hopelessness j of Jones' caso. I "It is all the fault of that turnpike man who gave them the supper?or, was it the breakfast?" cried Jones, in I nis agony. "If they had only charter? ed uuo to lay a turnpike from-Pig's Bun to Terrapin Hollow, I might have borne it, but tho very idea or layiug a turupiko across tho Delaware ltiver, from Burlington to Bristol, is uu in fernul absurdity." So it was. "And ain't you divorced?" suid Eli? za, a fhur rolling down euch cheek. "No!" thuudered Jones, crushing his hat between his knees; "and what is worse, the Legislature have ad? journed and gone homo drank, and won't be back to Trenton until next j year." It was sad. The mistake had oc? curred on the last day of the session, when the Legislature and transcribing clerks were laboring under the effects1 of a ohampugoo supper, followed by a cliampugne breakfast. Smith's name had been put where Jones'ought to have been, and "wise-wersey," us the Latin poet hath it. if or Sale or Sent.
