pected, the contest in ritualism came
to a close in tbe Episcopal Conven?
tion. The large majority given iu
favor of tho new uanon was probably
secured not by speeches or arguments,
during debate, but by the explanation
of tbe committee. Their spokesman
stated that tbo canon, while presenting
a mere opinion that t?eituiu ritualistic
aots and praotioes were of doubtful
doctrine, by no means settled the
question or favored the - acts, but
simply paved the way for an investiga?
tion and trial when they took place.
The real battle over ritualism is to be
fought when these cases come up for
trial. The vita) question is thus post?

sweeping provisions have received

Administration that they can bo made
to oover ulmost any case, or to accom?

of citizens io Louisiana und Alabama
have been arrested aud dragged iu

homes on charges which, even if true,
would deprive the infamous statute of
all jurisdiction. But true or false,
right or wrong, every purpose is an?
swered. The Democrats are intimi?
dated and kept away from the polls,
and the Republicans are at liberty to
employ every species of fraud wbioh
will insure the triumph of their party.

ample of New York, if, indeed, it did
not long ago lead New York by its bad
example. The City Counoils there
have voted, for extraordinary ex?
penses, $3,216,000; $1,000,000 is
asked for water, $1,000.000 for sewers,
$1,000,000 by tbe G.?s Trust, and
$216,000 for station houses, all to be
raised by loans, and the Public Build?
ing Commissioners ask for $500,000
more to eke ont what has fallen short
in tbe taxes. The city began 1874
with a funded and floating debt of
over 860,000,000, and a financial sheet
that required $11,723,816 from taxa?
tion, in addition to all the other reve?
nues of tho city. One-third of this
taxation is required to pay iuterests.
A Most Unjust Insinuation.?It has
b?9n stated in some quarters and in?
sinuated iu others, that Judge Greene
was now dissipating, and that this is
the cause of his absence from active
participation iu the campaign. We
know, from personal knowledge, that
the statement is utterly without foun?
