A City Without Light.?Dublin,
the capital of Ireland, haa juat sus
iained a heavy loss in the total de?
struction of the city gas works, leav?
ing the oity in total darkness at night.
The intense heat and noxions vapor
from the burning and escaping gas
prevented the firemen from doing any?
thing to save the works. Dublin is a
large and splendid city, in fact one of
the finest in the British Empire, and
snob, a loss as this will be severely felt,
because Ok! the time that must elapse
before it can be repaired, and the
danger to life and property in the
meantime.
-.
- The Republicans, especially in the
States of New York and Pennsylvania,
are manifestly much alarmed about the
i'esnlt of the coming elections. One
of the best evidences that they feel
the need of every vote is found in the
fact that the officers of all the Repub?
lican associations in Washington have
been urged with unusual vehemence
to see that every elector shall go home
to cast his ballot.
An old man, named Luther Bryant,
a dealer in old coins, etc., was recently
arrested in New York, on a frivolous
obarge, and while in confinement, lm
house was robbed of about $120,000,
principally in gold coin?which he
kept secreted there.
The Duke of Northumberland writes
to the editors of the Newcastle Journal
to contradict the rumor that he has
been received in the Roman Catholic
Church. The Duko characterizes the
report as a false and baseless calumny.
The debt of the city of New York on
the 1st of September la&t, is stated at
8126,505,189, being uu increase within
the last three years of $32,581,307.
This is the oost of greatness.
On the 21st inst.. Mrs. Allen Turner,
of Nash, N. 0., gave birth to her twen?
ty-first child, and the good lady is re?
ported still in her prime.
