argued at length before tbe Synod.

hold on those two great States,' it is
admitted tbat its chances of success
in tho next Presidential election are
worth very little. Conscious of this,

quarters of the Radical Congressional
Campaign Gommittoe in this city.
The indications are already very plain
tbat tbe Radical managers bero, in
New York and Pennsylvania, and
indeed throughout tbe whole country,
will work witb all tbe energy of despair
from now until tbe idea of November.
When Attorney-General Williams
gave up the famous landaulet wbicb
brought his overweening ambition to
grief, it was supposed tbat, in due
coarse of time, all other Government
officials, who were sporting handsome
equipages at tbe public expense, would
follow his example. Since last winter,
attention bas been sever.il times called
to this matter, but tbere are a number
of high officials who continue to defy
public opinion by drawing money from
the Treasury to keep up carriages for
their families. No less a person than
Senator Conkling, of New York, has
remarked tbat Senators have as muoh
right to keep carriages at the public
expense as any of the department offi?
cials. This view seems to be rapidly
coming in favor, and several members
of both Houses now say tbat tbey are
determined either tbat tbe department I
officials shall stop this practice ut that
Congressmen shall enjoy tbe same pri?
vilege.
To-day the Seoretary of tbe Trea?
sury commenced tbe active inaugura?
tion of his policy of having but one
of a family in his department. Twenty
five clerks, wbo were found to have
relatives in tbe department, were
notified tbat their scrvioes would be
dispensed with after the first of No
vemoer. In conneotion with thh
policy of tbo Seoretary, the knotty
question has come up for decision as
to whether a mother-in-law is a rela?
tion. All tbe employees who bavo
mothers-in-law in the department con
tend most vigorously that no relation-!
ship exists. The Secretary has not
yet been able to make up bis mind.
When he arrives at a conclusion on
tbis point be will then bo confronted
with tbe question as to whether a
sister-in-law is a relation.

bank, aud made him open tbo vault,
which they robbed of about 64,500 in
currency and 815,000 to 320,000 in
bonds, mostly Government, and somo
other securities. They then led him
baok to tho house, tied bim to a bed?
post, and left. The family foroed
open the closet about 4 o'clock, aud
gave the alarm, but no trace of the
robbers cuuld be discovered.

ment, this morning, from Capt. A. H.
Semmes, commanding the Peosacola
navy yard, announces that Creiglar,
machinist of the tug Rose, O'Dowd,
the fireman, and thirteen seamen of
the Ajax, were attacked with the fever
Sunday. O'Dowd died; the others
are doing well.

for the lives of its employees, on the

der mills must expect to be blown up.
A suit was brought against u Brooklyn
company to recover for the life of an
employee lost through the negligence
of the employer. Tbe counsel for the
defendant coutended that even if tbe
allegation as to negligence wero true,
the company was not responsible, be?
cause tbe deceased had taken the situa?
tion with all its attendant dangers.
The court sustained this view of the
