BY JULIAN A. SELBY.
A Swell at the Gallows ?The
first Earl of Hollaud war-, a great dandy,
who played a prominent and nut alto?
gether reputable part in the history of
his time.' He was a favorite at the
courts of James I uud Charles I; but
when the civil war broke out, he at
first sided with the Parliament ngaiuat
the king. In an unlucky hour ho wont
over to the royalist side, took up arms
against the commonwealth, was de?
feated, made prisoner, put to triul and
duly sentenced to lose his head. Ho
appeared upon the Boaffold in a whito
satin vest und nap trimmed with silver
lace. His costly garments were tho
lawful perquisites of the executioner,
to whom the Earlsaid, as he approach?
ed the biock: -nere. my friend, lot
my body and my clotheB alone; there
is ten poundB for thee; that is better
than my clothes, I am Bure. And
when you take up my head, do not
take off my cap." Then laying his
neck upon the block, he added: "Stay,
while I give the sign." After a brief
prayer he etiotched out his hand, Bay?
ing, "Nowl nowl" The word had
hardly left bis lips when the axe fell,
and the head waB severed from the
body at a single Btroke.
Why not abolish the ohuroh steeple?
Is there any part of a bnilding so ut?
terly useless as a steeple? It cao nei?
ther be oonstruoted nor kept in repair
without great danger to human life,
and it doesn't look well after tho beat
that can be done for it has been done.
As if Heaven itself were protesting
against the folly of this unsightly heap,
scarcely a thunder-Btorm passes over
the country which does not hnrl its
bolts againBt Bomo ohurch steeple.
During a storm, thin Bummer, in New
Jersey, a steeple waB struck three times
in succession. The other day, light?
ning Btruek the steeple of a ohnrch in
Ohio, and nine women in the church
were prostrated, five of whom may
never recover. Why should we set np
targets for the lightning? Even if the
road to Heaven really hea through the
atmosphere, we have surer guides to it
than ohuroh spires. We would be
gainera by building onr churches on
modeBt plans. The atory of the Tower
of Babel is quite enough to show that
Heaven is brought no nearer by build?
ing high into the air.
