The Great'Scandal? The Current
Setting Against Beecher.?The New
York correspondent of the Hartford
(Gonn.) Times, of September 30, says:
Q 'The uuder-cuirent in tho Beecher
Ttlton soandal ia now seething mjre
than over since Tilton'e last statement.
Orthodox people, who previously wero
on Beeober's side almost unanimously,
are greatly divided, mauy having ar;
rayed themselves against him and. be?
come open in expressions of belief in
his guilt. The latter say privately
that he must retire from the pulpit,
aud that his return to it will do irrepa
rsbl? iajary to ths cause of Christianity
in America and Protestantism through?
out the world. These are making
great efforts to unite Congregational
ohurohes against Plymouth Church, at
least to draw up a series of resolutions
expressing entire disapproval of
Beeoher, and of tho determination of
his parishioners to cleavo to him in
the face of the strongest indications of
his guilt. Present appearances are,
notwithstanding published denials,
that all Congregational societies will
make open and relentless war on
Plymouth Church if it permits Beecher
to resumo his ministry. Many leading
preachers and laymen here nud in
Brooklyn do not hesitate to say they
believe Beeoher guilty."
The Dreary Radical "GosrEL."?
In the beggary and bankruptcy of Re?
publican statesmanship uolhiug re?
mains but tho gospel of hatred, nod
Rosooe Conkling preaches it at Utica
with as much earnestness, as much
eloquence and as much feoiing a3 ho
preached war to the knife when Hum tor
fell. We confess it is dreary reading,
and the mind turns awny in despair
from this continual refrain about the
"rebels" and "rebellion," "treason"
and "slavery"?these invocations of
war, these persistent adulations of
Gen. Grant as "necessaryito the safety"
of the Union.?Neio York Herald.
Prussia's Piscatorial Purchase.?
A statement is ourrent in New Jersey
that an agent of the Prussian Govern?
ment recently effected the purchase of I
Lake Weewanapee, a small sheet of
water in Union County. The price |
paid is set at $300,000. The usu to
which the lake is to be put, as set
forth, is tho raising of leeches for
medical purposes, aud of salmon and
trout, the fish to be used for stockiug
Prussian streams. The lake is fed by
springs. It is to be divided off iuto
leeoh and fish divisions.
