enlightened statesmanship, which was

ate iuatrucliou cf Mr. Lincoln, but
stupidly and nupardouubly disap?

war been beurd to utter one unkind or
iiliberul seutiment toward those of his
fellow-citizens who had beeu overcome
iu arm*, uud bus uover besituted to ex?
press bis ardent desire for a general
amnesty. The writer then proceeds to
praise Gcu. Sherman for his ability
and facility in public speaking, uud
while it does not condemn Grant, it
compliments Geb. Sherman for ull
those qualities in which Grant is nota?
bly dehoieut.
There has beeu of lute considerable
talk among Sherman's friends of bring?

this elaborate article that it is their
programme to run him us the people's
candidate on the basis of amuesty, re
conciliation und peace, as opposed io
the Graut idea of military subjugation
and onduriug sectional hatred. The
Chronicle is not regarded here us work?
