An Appeal
is behalf of the destitute orphans
of south carolina.
Notwithstanding the applaoBe of the
many and seaming appreciation of thut
noble charity, the Palmetto Ophans'
Home, so much needed and so well
conducted, located in Columbia?with
the good it has already accomplished
in rescuing from want, ignorance and,
in many cases, from haunts of vice,
destitute orphans?we are sorry to ad?
mit that each an institution has been
crippled in its sphere of usefulness and
allowed to languish for want of aid ne?
cessary to its successful career; and
that the snpportand instruction of the
present happy family of orphans shel?
tered within its walls should be allowed
to depend on but few contributions.
However willing those few may be to
devote their energy and means in aid
of the enterprise, they nre, unable
themselves to carry tho entire burden,
consequently forced to appeal to the
people at large to assist in the good
work of establishing the Palmetto Or?
phans' Homo on a permunent basis.
The Home is not sectarian or deno?
minational. Tho Trustees consist of
members from the different branches
of the chureb. The children aro reli?
giously trained at home and in tho
several Sunday schools; during tho
week they aro instructed by a compe?
tent teacher, with special reference to
future usefulness. It is now a ques?
tion whether or not such an institution
in our midst, based entirely upon cha?
rity and love, with do paid oiliciul, be
supported, or shall it, for want of
means, be abandoned? uud the or?
phans now supported uud educated
therein ho thrown npou the world
destitute and Irieudlcs.
Reader, if you fuvor the former pro?
position, come nt once to the rescue.
Donations of money, provisions uud
clothing will ho acknowledged iu the
