Sharp Tax-Fayers.?-The Ohicogo
Inter- Ocean, of Friday last, has no'
fewer than twelve supplement sheets,
embracing ninety-?ix full pages of six
columns each, or about 284 feet of |
superfioial matter. - These sheets con?
tain lists of laudBsold for non-payment |
of taxes on lands in and near that city.
The explanation of so formidable a list:
of delinquents is to be found in the
peculiar provisions of the State reve?
nue law. The New York Commercial
Bulletin says that many tax-payers take
advantage of the legal requirements
and find it oheaper to permit their
properly to be advertised as delinquent
than to pay their taxes when due. The
interest upon or use of the money
neoessary to pay their taxes is of
greater value than the simple cost of
the advertisement, and henoe property*
owners wait. Especially is this the
oase with large tax-payers, The coat
of advertising is the same, whether the
tax due upon a lot is fifty cunta or fifty
dollars.
The Lincoln Tower, in London,
which wus so much talked about a
short timo ago, turns ont to be merely
a stecplo to the Rev. Newman Hall's I
churoh. Englishmen and Americans
contributed ?3D,000 in gold to pay for
it, and it is ornamented by the stars |
and stripes, the British lion and the|
American eagle. It is strango that,
with all the opportunities they bavo
had for learning bettor, there urn so
many Americans who mielako foolish?
ness for patriotism. If it is possible I
for the spirit of old Abe to look upon
that ridiculous tower, with its eagle1
and its lion, he mast feel either very
sad or very much' amused at his coun?

frantic desperation of madness it seeks

Carolina, not appreciating the fact

tion and indecency, by its crimes
ugainst the people, against their liber?
ties, against civilization itself, for?
feited the right to exist, and much
more, the honor to govern. It givcB

struggle for a new lease of power, and
it puts forth efforts corresponding to
the importance of the stake and tho

speak, of tho political fortunes of a
number of aspiring men and candi?
dates, they are ready to exert its power

corrupting doctrines, and, if possible,

Wo shall not speak of oursolves,
further than to say that wo occupy in
this contest no doubtful attitude. We
have certain clearly-defined views and
objects whioh we seek to impress upon
the publio mind. We see just before
us gigantic issues, and it is our effort to
enlighten and prepare the country for
them. As we have frequently said,
there is much to be done. If we were
to-day enlightened upon tbe mattere
whioh so nearly oonoorn us; if our peo?
ple fully a ad rightly appreciated the
situation in whioh they are; if they
only saw and felt the momentous
events which are hastening on; if they
were both informed of and sternly
united upon tbe duties of the hour, the
Radical power would molt away before
their stern determination. Will our
friends think of tho great cause which
they, us well as we, ought to have at
heart? Will thoy strengthen our hands
by their sympathy, encouragement and
supporl? Our means are moderate,
our resources small. Wo ure a unit
ugainst a multitude. We uro alone in
i the midst of etrong combinations. Wo
depeud entirely upon legitimate bu?
siness. We have nothing to rely
upon but subscriptions and advertise?
ments. These we want, nud it is not
too much for ne to say, these we are
entitled to have. We ought to-day to
number at least 5,000 subscribers in
this State. That wonld bring ns ad?
vertising. That would make us peon
niarily independent. That would
enable us to employ and pay for talent
in employees and writers in number
and foroe sufficient to make a strong
impression on the side we espouso aud
defend. We should like to soud forth
a strong and able journal, tho power?
ful advocate of trutb, the inflexible
exponent of duty, the clarion voice
summoning the people to concert of
notion against the wrongs thoy too pa?
tiently endure. Wo should enjoy luy
ing on our editorial eoourgo every
day, whipping tho rascals naked
through the laud. But if wo arc to be
a power, to stand ns a sentinel on the
