BY JULIAN A. SELBY.
The late Legislature of the District
of Columbia, in adjourning sine die,
gave signal evidence of the uu fitness
of its members for the grave trust
oommitted to them, and of the wisdom
oi the aotion.of Congress in abolishing
the District, government. The Wash?
ington Siar is authority for the state?
ment that on adjourning sine die some
of the members seem to have carried
away almost everything portable about
the chamber?deRks, chairs, .clocks,
water .coolers, 'mirrors, inkstands,
washBtands,; towels, combs, brashes,
soap, and evon tho second-hand tooth
bruahea. One- member, in his solici?
tude to preserve some memento of thia
last representative body and bulwark
of the people of i the" District, took
away a large feather duster, and, not
to be ostentatious, about it, he con?
cealed the .same upon his person with
o mside'rablo ingenuity by passing the
handle down a trouser-leg and but?
toning the feather eud snugly under
his vest.
In Philadelphia every lady is a cen?
turion. Everything in that oity is
centuplioated; wherever you>go, what?
ever you do, the Centennial stares you
in the face; yon-, have to wear it on
yonr paper collar, and wash your hands
with centennial towels and soap. The
whole name is a farce, as it would lead
yon to suppose it 'was to happen bat
once in 100 years; but in the city of
Brotherly Love it seems they are to
keep it up together. Tho girls have
powdered their hair to make them
look 100 years older; the old women
have powdered theirs to make them
look like the young girhi. On a oare
fal estimate .there about 220.000 Mar?
tha Washington costumes in that city
now, which cbstume consists of abtut
three yards of old fashioned curtain
calico, a mob cap, a black patch
under the left eye, and a seventy-five
cents pair of high-heeled slippcru.

"The IiitfoKTAii Jackson."? The
Bichmond Enquirer says:
These are reported to have been
President Grant's words at Staunton,
as he stood on the platform of the car
when reference was made to "Stone?
wall" Jackson, whose honored name
was recalled by the fact, that the baud
of the Stonewall Brigade was appoint?
ed to receive him. Geueral Graut, so
the telegram 9ays, raised his hat uud
simply said, but with much fueling:
"The Immortal Jackson." It was u
grand tribute, and we believo an
honest and sincere one, to the genius
of onrdistingnished Confederate chief?
tain.
