'Tis the part of a coward to brood
O'er the past that is withered and
dead;
What though the heart's roses are
BBhes and dust?
What though the heart's muBio be
fled?
Still shine the grand heavens o'er
head,
Whenoe the voice of an angel thrills
clear on the soul,
"Gird about thee thine armor; press
on to the goal!"
It the faults or the crimes of thy youth
Are a bnrden too heavy to bear,
What hope can re^bloom on ihe deso?
late waste
Of a jealous and craven despair?
Down, down with the fetters of fear I
In the strength of thy valor and man
hood arise,
With the faith that illumines and the
will that defies.
"Too later through God's infinite
world,
From his throne to life's nethermost
fires?
"Too late!" is a phantom that flies at
the dawn
Of the sonl that repents and aspires,
If pure thon hast made thy desires,
There's no height the strong wings of
immortals may gain
Wbioh in striving to reach thou Bhalt
strive for in vain.
Then np to the contest with fate,
Unbounded by the past, whioh is j
dead;
What though the heart's musio be
fled?
Still shines the fair heavens o'er head; j
And sublime as the angel who rules in
the Him
Beams the promise of peace when the
conflict is won.
. Fetre.?The eldest son and heir of
Lord Petre, of London, has renounced
the brilliant position to whioh he was
born, and the wealth and honors of his
birthright, and been ordained a Jesuit
friest in the church of that order in
arm street. He is in his twenty
seventh year. This makes the second
heir to a British peerage who is now a
Jesuit priest, the other one being a
brother and heir of Lord Arnndell, of
Wardonr. Lord Petre has estates
whioh yield a revenue of ?25,000
year.
A Valuable Relic.?Dr. Henry
Winthrop has recently presented to
the Charleston Library Society the
oldest copy of Wm. Hogarth's works
now extant. The volume contains
forty-six choice engravings from hie
original paintings, and wbb purchased
in London by Mr. Henry LaureuB, in
1784, from the widow of Hogarth. It I
was presented by bim to Mr. Charles
Eraser, the talented Carolina artist,
and from him became' the property of
Dr. Winthrop.
The owner of Apology, the winner
of the Oaks stakes at Epsom this year,
is a clergyman of the Uhuroh of Eng?
land, who resides in the North of
England, and races under the name of
"Mr. Launde." He appears to think \
that the ownership of race-horses is
not quite in accordance with Iiis sacred
calling, for he sent round to all the j
sporting papers requesting the editors
not to give his real name,
