duoe the salary of the British Minister
at Washington was rejected by the
House , of Commons, by a vote of 89
to 2. Thu debate on the motion was
unnsally interesting. It arose from
the mot that the approval of the House
was required to the increase'of salary
proposed by the Government, Hir H.
Wolff moved that the amount the Go?
vernment recommended be reduced
$5,000. He said' he opposed the in?
crease booanse Sir Edward Thornton'*
residence at Washington had been
signalised by.a series of diplomatic
disasters, end because the Americans
would regard snob increase as a mark
of continustiao by the present Go?
vernment of the approbation which
the late Government lavished upon the
negotiations of the Washington treaty.
Burke, Under Secretary of Foreign
Department, stated that no blame could
attach to Sir Edward Thornton for the
oonduot or result of the negotiations
with the United States, and he stated
that the reason for adding to the
salary was simply because tho expenses
of living in Washington had increased.
The Times contradicts1 the reports of
the complete withdrawal of the Ounard
steamers from Boston, on account of
the scarcity of freight, and states that
the only ohunge to be made is that
some of the steamers which go to Bos?
ton will return by way of New York.

less millions in his body. He suffered
terribly before death.
