What Zaccheus Did.?A story is toid
of a certain newspaper proprietor who
relieved his dishonesty by a spice of
humor. The agent of a large manufac?
turing houBo went to him to protest
against frequent assaults in the edi?
torial columns.
"What the devil is the matter?" asked
the latter.
"All you say is an infernal liel But
then we feel that we can't afford to have
this thing go on. What shall we do to
stop it?"
The proprietor appeared abstracted
for a few moments, and then remarked:
"I was thinking abont a character in
the Bible. Let me Beel His name was?
was Zaccheus. What did he do? Ob,
yes; he climbed a tree to see the Lord;
and he didn't see him, either. What
did he do then? Do you remember,
Mr. Agent, what he did then?"
"He came down, I euppose."
"Ah, yes!?thank you?that's itl no
came down, sensible fellow; he came
dowol"
The parable was fitting. Tho agent
imitated the example of Zuccbeus, and
the journalistic batteries were instanta?
neously spiked.
Whenever yon see a small boy coming
out of the bouse with one hand on bis
eyes and tho other over the basement of
his pants, you can come to the conclu?
sion that ho and the old gentlamnn had
a slight misunderstanding.
Seegers' vs. Cincinnati Beer.
THE Cincinnati Gazette makes tho asto?
nishing announcement that Cincinnati
beer is ne longor pure, but adulterated with
molasses, Bugar of starch, fusel oil and the
poieonous Colchicum. The Commissioner of
Agriculture, in his report for 18G5, says that
Prof. Mapea, of New York, analyzed tho beer
from a dozen different breweries, and found
all of it adulterated. Coccnlus Indiens and
nux vomica entered largely into its composi?
tion.
J. O. SFEGERS guarantees hi3 beer to be
pure and reliable. He does not adulterate
It, but brews from tho best bat lev, malt and
hope. _ _ " Jan 23
