Tbe Speaker elect, standing at the bar, and having on his right hand Black Bod, and on bis left tbe Sergeant-at Arms, addressed tho Lord a Commis? sioners as follows: My Lords: I have to acquaint yonr Lordships that in obedi? ence to her Majesty's command, her Ma? jesty's faithful Commons haver exorcised their undoubted right, and have pro? ceeded to tbe election of a Speaker, und that their choice has fallen npon me. I hnmbly present myself at yonr bar for her Majesty's graaions approbation. The Lord Chancellor Baid: Mr. Brand, we are commanded to assnro yon that her Majesty is fully sensible of your zeal for the pnblio service and of your ample sufficiency to execute- the ardu? ous dnties which her faithful Commons have seleoted yon to discharge, and she does most readily approve and confirm yon as their Speaker. The Speaker said : I hnmbly snbmit myself to her Majesty's graoious com' manda. It ia now my duty, npon be half of the Commons of tbe United Kingdom, to lay olaim to their un doubted rights and privileges. I hnmbly petition her Majesty that she will be graciously pleased to allow us freedom from arrest of onr persons and servants; and,'above all, freedom of access to her Majesty's royal person whenever occa? sion may reqnire; and that the best con Btrnotion may be put npon all our pro oeedings. For myself, my lords, ] desire that the most favorable construc? tion may be put npon my acts, and that whatever I do in error may he attributed to myself alone, and not to her Majes ty's iaitbfo! ThO Lord Chancellor replied: Mr. Speaker, we have it further in command to inform yon that ber Majesty does most readily confirm all the rights and privileges which have ever been granted or confirmed to tho Commons, by any of her royal predecessors. With respect to yourself, sir, ber Majesty is sensible that you stand iu no need of such au as snrance. Her Majesty will ever pnt tbe most favorable coustrucliou upon words and aotions. The Speaker then bowed to their lord? ships, who bowed in return, and tbe right honorable gentleman, followed by the members of the lower house, retired.
