which was gold, pierced with holes like
a pepper box. The top contained la

of snutf, and on entering a house or
room where a disease supposed to be in?
fectious prevailed, the doctor would

the powder, and then apply it to his
nose: Hence all the old prints of phy?
sicians represent them with canos to
their noses.
The King of Bavaria, who, as is well
known, is very fond of music and the
ballet, and a constant attendant at the
theatres, met a one-armed soldier in
Munich and entered into conversation
with him. The soldier answered ab?
ruptly, but apologized when he found
whom he was addressing. "How was
r it," asked the monaruh, "that you did
not know me?." "How oould I?" asked
the one-armed hero; "you never come
to the army and I never go to the thea?
tre."
The will of Miss Sophia J. Snow, be?
queathing $85,000 to varions charitable
institutions, has been admitted to pro
bate in Boston. The will ends as fol?
lows: "I forbid all person or persons to
break this my last will and testament,
and whoever attempts to break it or
breaks it, may ho, she or they find so
peaoe of mind or body in this world or
the world to come."
In the last twenty-aevon years, 24,
1 602 conviots have been sent to the peni?
tentiary at Albany, X. Y. Of these 21,
057 have acknowledged that previous to
their oonviotion they were addicted to
drunkenness.
