The Danger of Tita Granges.?The
Grand Master ol Patrons of Husbandry
is folly alive to the danger to which the
order ia exposed from the demagogues
and lawyers vfho are an.xionB to join it
for their own selfish. purposes. In bis
address to the Grand Lodge, he re?
marks: "The order has beoq recognized
as one of the great powers of "the land,
and the gates are besieged from ocean to
oaean by hordes of speculators, dema?
gogues, small politicians, grain buyers,
oottoa faotors and lawyers, who sud?
denly discover that they aro 'interested
in agricoltnral pursuits.' It is true,
that they are interested in 'agricultural
pursuits,' but only as a hawk is inte?
rested in the upurrow." Uuless tho
grangers follow tho advice of their
Grand Master, and keep themselves
from the presence of tue professional
politicians, the order will bo short-lived,
and will utterly fail to accomplish any
useful purpose.
Ah ingenious American abroad has
proposed to run a tunnel under the St.
Bernard, of tho Alpine range of mono
taios, to be abont 2,000 feet in length.
Beneath the summit it is intended to
widen the tunuel so as to make a sta?
tion, and to connect it by means of an
elevator with the open air. At tho
mouth of the elevator it is .proposed to
build a hotel, so that the Alpine scenery
and sunrises may bo enjoyed without
any personal exortion. ,
They havo a nice oity government in
Jacksonville?very nioe. A negro po?
liceman arrested a Northern pbysioian?
himself an invalid?who was making a
professional call the other day, pot him
in irons, carried him beforo tho Mayor,
and that enlightened functionary fined
him $10 and oostB. Visitors would do
well to be wary.
A gentleman, named Boiling, is about
to enter suit for the recovery of the
ownership of nearly one-half of the oity
of Biohmond, Va.
