word "quiz," to make fan of or poke
fun at a person, was the coin ago of a
theatrical manager in Dublin, who, at a
drinking party with his friends on 8a
turday night, when the conversation
turned upon tho euhjeot of words, of?
fered to bet the wine that he oonld, then
and there, coin a word that would be in
the.months of Dublin next day. The
bet being taken and the party dispersed,
the manager oalled upon hia oall-boys
and runners, gave them pieces of chalk,
and ordered them to rnn all over the
city, chalking the word "quiz" on every
door, shutter and fence they came to.
This was done, and, as a matter of
course, the new word was in everybody's
mouth the next day. The manager won
bis bet, and 'bis word is now in ail re?
spektable dictionaries.
Thealang expression for death, "kick?
ing the bucket," had its origin from one
Boleover, who, in England, a great
while ago, committed suioide by stand?
ing on a bucket till he kicked the bucket
from ander him.
The word "oumper." meaning a full
drink when .friends are drinking, is a
corruption of the toast offered in French
to the Pope* when the Oatholio religion
was in the ascendant in England, au

"Humbug" is a oorrnption of the
Irish words uim bog, pronounced oom
bog, signifying soft copper, or pewter,,
or brass, or worthless money, suoh as
was made by James II, at the Dublin
mint?twenty shillings of which was
worth only two pence sterling. At first
applied to worthless coin, the word be?
came the general title of anything false
or counterfeit.
The sign "viz," signifying to wit, or
namely, isJ an abbreviation of videlicit;
bnt the third letter was not originally z;
itwas the mark used in medicine for a
drahm, which, in writing, very muoh
resembles z, and in viz was simply used
as'a mark'?r sign of abbreviation.
