Thh New Combustible.?Wo stated, sftjB (falignani's Messenger, a short time ago, that a Belgian peasant had made the extraordinary 'discovery that earth, coal and Boda mixed np together would bnrn as well and better than any other combustible, and the faot has since then been proved beyond a donbt. The way in whioh he found this out is curi? ous. He had been scraping the floor of his cellar with a shovel, in order to bring all the bite of coal lying about into a hsap, whiob, mixed an it was with earth and other impurities, be put into hi? etovo. To bi? oBtonisbinsnt, he found that his accidental compound bnrnt better instead of cvorso than ho expeoted, and emitted much groator heat. Beirjg an intelligent man, he en? deavored to discover the cauBe, and found that a great deal of soda, proba? bly the remnant of the last wash, lay about on the floor of the collar, and that some of it must have got info his heap. TT? then Dj?dc? few experiments, and st length improved his oompound suf? ficiently to render it practical. The publicity giyeu in Belgium to this dis? covery caused trials to be mado every? where, and it has now been ascertained that three parts of earth and one of coal dust, watered with a concentrated solu? tion of soda, will burn well and emit great heat. Many Parisian papers talked of it, but only one?the Moniteur?went so far as to make tho experiment at its printing office. A certain quantity of triable and slightly sandy earth was mixed with the quantum of coal dast prescribed; tho two ingredicntB were well incorporated with each other, and then made into a paste with tho solntion ; above mentioned. The firo place of one of the boilers had previously boon lighted with coal, and the firo wus kopt np with a shovelful of tho mixture. The latter in a few seconds was trans? formed into a dry brown crust, which Boon after beoamo red hot uod then burnt brightly, but without being vory rapidly*consnmed. Tho fact of tho combustion is, therefore, well ascer? tained; but before the eyptem enn be universally adopted thero aro soino im? portant points to be considerod, euch as the calorific power of tho mixt uro com? pared to that of pure conl, its price, and, abovo all, a remedy for tho groat drawback attaching it?its fouling tho fire grato considerably. An r?dvortisemeut in tho Brandon (Vt.) Union, after describing eomo land for sale, says: "Tho reason for selling ia that the proprietor is a widower, ad? vanced in life, with no one to help car? ry on the property. If not sold, a re? spectable, industrious, middle-aged fe? male partner, rich or poor, could make here a good investment under marriage contract or otherwise. No fancy stock wanted." That man delivers a very powerful temperance leotnre who goes home drunk, shoots his wife and then onts his own throat; and there is little doubt that it causes many a conscience-stricken wretoh to pawn his pietol for some more drinks and carry a dull knife. Oaleb Gashing was rejeoted by tho United States Senate no less than twen ty-Bovon consecutive tiraep, when nomi? nated by Tyler for Secretary of tho Treasury. So that he ought to bo used to it. T.M.
