A Kansas paper gives the following report of * judge's sentence lately passed on a criminal: "B rum ley, you infamous scoundrel! You're an unre? deemed villvan 1 You hain't a single re? deeming trait in your character. Your wife and family wish we had eent yon to the penitentiary. This is the fifth time I've bad yon before me, and yon have put me to more trouble than your neok is worth. I've exhorted and prayed over yon long enough, you scoundrel 1 Jost go home and take one glimpse at your family and be off in short order 1 Don't let's ever hear of you again. The grand jury have found two other indiotmeuts againBt you, bnt I'U.disoharge you on your own recogni? zance, and if I ketch you in this neck of woods to-morrow morning, at daylight, I'll sock yon right square in jail and damp you off to Jeffersonvillo in less than no time, yon infamona scoundrel! If ever I catch you crossing your finger at m$n, woman or child?white man or higger*?I'll sock you square into the jug! Stand up, you scoundrel, while I pass sentence on yon." The Tablet relates a story of a priest who had a coughing congregation, nud who oared them thus. No sooner had he ceased to speak than, singular to relate, one cough after another died ont until soon there was absolute silence in. the church. Whereupon the father said something to the following effeot: "My friends, I know that in this weather colds abound, and therefore it is diffi? cult for yon to refrain from oonghing. Still it is impossible for me to preach and yea to cough at the same time. Let as come, then, to a mutual agree? ment, so that yon may cough and I may ?reach without disturbing each other. Will speak, say, for five or ten minutes | at a time. When I raise my handker? chief, there will be an interval allowed for coughing. As soon as I let it fall, I will resume my sermon, and yon your silence." The plan succeeded admira? bly. IRWINS HALL. TJtAOY W. TITUS, - - - - Afanosrcr. ONES NIGHT ONI.V !
