Comptroller Green, of New York city,
ban lately startled the Citizens of that
town, who have time to attend to any?
thing elau than their own personal busi?
ness, by the statement, that, fioacoially,
tho city affairs are getting worse and
worse. New York levies a large amount
of taxes, and, with assessments and
charges of various kinds, the income is
large. Last year the receipts were $32,?
250,000, an exceediugly great return;
but large as were these figures, the ex?
penditure far exceed them. They were
$52.300.000, showing that in the
course of twelve months the indebted?
ness of the city of New York bad been
added to an amount exoeeding $20,
000,000.
Somebody in a Georgia court "ap
plauded," wherenpsn the judge (we
quote fr^m the Griflio News) indignant?
ly remarked: "Now, dry that up; I will
let you kuow thut this is no camp meet?
ing for exhnborating your enthusiasm;
this court hhall be respected at the risk
of outraging the seventeenth command?
ment to tho Constitution; aud if you
opto your fly-tiup or pat-a pat with
them number fourteen hrogans of yours
again, I will send yon to to jail for
thirty duys, where you will remain with?
out ttie benefit of a tlamnnm obsque in?
juria."
Hou. A. B. Meacham has beon lec?
turing in San Francisco on the Modocs*
and in narrating the circumstances at?
tending the assassination of Gen. Can
by, and bis owu escape, said: Boston
began to take my souip with a bluut
knife; but Toby interposed with de?
vices to delay the operation, nnd when
at length he had raised five or six inches
of skiti ou th<- li ft ride of my head,
Toby, woman-like, acoompliubed by
strategy what could not be done other?
wise. She shouted, "SolJiersl soldiersl"
and Boston left his work unfinished.

A blundering foreman said "not
guilty," in a New York court, the other
day, when, as it afterward appeared,
ten of tbe jury were for conviction'. The
court was amazed at the verdict, for the
guilt of the prisoner had been clearly
proved. As for tbe prisoner, he "lit
out" the instant he beard tbe verdict,
nnd was not to be found when the in?
formality had been discovered.
