Omaha, October 16.?A terrible prai? rie fire swept over twenty-five miles of country,'near the Omaha and South? western Railroad, in Saline and Jeffer? son Counties, Nebraska, on Tuesday. Many houses and large quantities of grain were destroyed. At Wilber, ten school children were oaught iu the flames. Three perished on the spot, three mere will die and four are dread folly maimed, but will recover. Mrs. Manley, mother of three of tho chil? dren, ran to help them, and received fatal injuries. The fire originated near the Otoe reservation, and traveled North-east a distanoo of over twenty-five, miles, destroying everything iu its path. Near Wilber and tea miles Sjutb of Crete, the avalanche of flame ap? proached a sohool-house filled with cbil dren, a number of whom rushed out and endeavored to escape. Ten of t hem were overtaken, and throe burned tu death, throe fatally injured and four very severely maimed. Most of them are girls. The mother of those three children, in her endeavors to save them, was so terribly burned that she cauuot recover. Immense quantities of grain, many homes and barns were destroyed, and there is much suffering furred iu consequence. St. Louis, October 18.?Tho Inde? pendent, or Old School, Presbyterian Synod.of Missouri met bore yesterday. This is the Synod which, iu 18Gt5, as? serted a declaration and testimony vhioh caused it to be ruled out of rep? resentation at and led to its secession from the Northern General Assembly, to which it then belonged, and siuco then it has been independent of all higher bodies. The most interesting question before the Synod was a propo aiiiuu to uuite with the Southern aud Reformed Ohuroh. A lengthy disaus eion was had?Rev. Dr. Brooke, of St. Louis, being tbe most prominent op poser of the resolution. A vote was finally reached late last night, and re? sulted in 47 yeas to 32 nays. Dr. Brooks then asked the thirly-two opponents of nnion to meotiu his ohuroh, this morn? ing, to dotermiuo what further action shall bo taken. It is believed they will secede and organize a new Synod. The bi?bop was murdered in the sa oristy of the Chapel of St. Jean De Dien, having been stabbed in the heart and lungs while at prayer. One Emil Pelle? tier, a cousin of the bishop, was oharged with the orime and arrested. It is said the crime was incited by the fact that Bishop DeVere inherited all the fortune of Pelletier's father, a wealthy French? man. Some surprise has been caused by the failure of the prosecution in the Stokes case to call the uew witness, Mrs. Ben ton, of whom so tnuah has been said aud written. Assistant District Attorney Allen said this morning that tho prose? cution hud never intended to call Mrs. Beutou. He said that he was ignorant, or feigned to be ignorant, of certain matters with which she was supposed to be familiar, and that moroover her cha? racter was suoh that it was uudesirable to pat her in the witness-box. Among her cargo were seventy-five barrels of oil, which bursted, spreading over the surface of the water in sheets of flame, by which many were burned after leaving the boat. New Yore, October 20.?It is said charges of the most serioub oharaoter have been preferred against various members of the detective squad at po? lice headquarters. The principle of those charge? is understood to be based on alleged collusion between two of the dotectives and George McDonald, latoly convicted of forging in London. It is alleged that McDonald was allowed to retain a large amount of money whioh should have been seized and dolivered to Mr. Dacosta, representative of the Bauk of England iu this country. Mc? Donald, it is said, made an affidavit em? bodying his knowledge of the case, and sent it to Dacosta, who laid the mutter before tho District At orney. A list of the chargos was prepared by the Assist ant District Attorney and forwarded to Police Commissioner Duryea. Washington, October 20.?In the Supreme Court, the oase of the State of I South Carolina, ex rel. the Trustees, vs. the State and County Treasurers, error to the Supreme Court of South Carolina, was brought up. This was a re-argu? ment of these oases. Tho question is, whether tbe bills issued by the Bank of tbe State of South Carolina, during the war, were so far issued in aid of the re bellum as to justify tbe County Treasu? rers in refusing to receive I hem in pay m nt of taxes, notwithstanding the charter of the bank, made in 1812, es? pecially provided they should bo so re? ceived. When formerly decided, the Court was against the validity of the bills as a tenure for taxes, with two dis leents.
